The main idea of this article is that since shootings are occurring, the police departments feel that they need to have military weapons in order to protect their citizens. Police want to gain more military weapons to enforce more safety and law.

I feel that it’s not necessary to have military weapons when we really should just be able to handle these problems without all of that. And also military weapons are made the military, not school departments etc. I also find it interesting that the police department feel the need to have military equipment in order to feel safer and more protected. A police officer might use it in the wrong way and hurt someone with a military weapon.

What do you think about our school security having military weapons to protect us? Is it really necessary? I think that that is very extreme to have. Even though we might have more safety, we shouldn't have to worry about it anyways. Do you agree with the fact that this is what our society has come to? We have come to high extremes in the last few months and have lost our way of sanity.

  1. I think that it is a very bad idea for them to bring military weapons to schools, it's not necessary! It's ridiculous to get military weapons, it will only scare citizens more not just make then feel safe.

  2. I don't think its necessary to have weapons in schools because its not right for young children to be around guns all the time. It gives you the feeling that your community isn't safe because there is guns around all the time attempting to protect these youngsters.

  3. Kaitlin, great job! I love your use of words. I agree with you that military wepons should only be used in the military.

  4. I think that the police having military weapons is a very bad idea. This will make the people of the US feel more unsafe because they will now be scared that the police has weapons and they might get hurt. Our society has come to high extremes over the last month with all the school shootings and the wars.

    1. You have a good point Thomas, however if military guns scares people wouldn't that diminish the crime rate which is the overall goal

    3. It is good that you analyzed this situation and saw how it would effect the world.

  5. If they truly have a need for military weapons such as recent public shootings or a high crime rate then I think it's fine. They should know when to use and how to use these weapons and why they are using them in the first place.

  6. I don't think the police need military weapons. What they have already is enough to protect the students.

  7. I agree with you Kaitlin! The fact that we are saying we need military guns at schools is showing how messed up our society is. Also I agree with Thomas on how US people might feel more unsafe. Great job Kaitlin!

    1. Ella, I agree with you completely! That shows exactly how messed up our society is becoming, saying that we need to keep weapons on hand in public areas, ESPECIALLY in schools, is just going to cause more trouble and corruptness. Kaitlin, you did a great job showing your opinion through your writing! Nice work:):)

  8. I think that is a very bad idea, because it might cause other people to panic seeing the police with military weapons.

    1. I disagree with this entirely, some people may find this even safer then it was before. Burglars and other 'bad guys' might even refrain from violence seeing the the military is carrying weapons

    2. I disagree with this entirely, because if "bad guys" see the police go to such extremes, they might go more extreme than before. Which is why people might begin to panic.

    3. I disagree with you entirely, let us say that there is a bad guy who wants to steal a woman's purse. The bad guy would refrain from doing so if he saw that there were armed policemen in the area. He wouldn't go to the extreme to take a purse.

    4. I disagree with you entirely, if the bad guy sees an armed policemen, it'll make the bad guys carry military weapons as well. If he wouldn't go to such extremes, why would he do it in the beginning.

    5. I disagree with you entirely, in this metaphorical scenario the police would then make getting a gun even more difficult, and just carrying around a gun out in the open is almost comical.

    6. I disagree with both of your entirely, but there is a way to make everyone happy. I believe it is okay to have weapons, but not military weapons. I believe that certain areas need to be protected, depending on what is needed to be protected. Schools, in my opinion, do not need to have security guards. They should keep our schools safe with regular weaponry if the school has had bad reports.

    7. I think you both have good points. Reading you're debate has caused me to rethink the situation. I don't think military weapons are necessary, but will not have a negative effect. Therefore (even though it's kind of cheating) I am now neutral on this topic. I think the military weapons could be used for added violence, but they could also make criminals fear the police.

    8. I disagree, although I can see your point, I believe that only certain police should have a military grade weapon. Schools on the other hand might even want to boost their security. The ideal school should be a safe judge free are for children to learn and develop who they are. With a high security there might even be less bullying and more children becoming successful in school.

  9. I think the police should be able to get these more advanced weapons in order to stop things like school shootings. I think that they should have to get additional training to be able to use these weapons.

  10. I think if the U.S. is trying to get rid of military weapons in general, that the people who protect us don't need them. Thinking of all the shootings and violence that has happened over the past few years reminds us about the consequences and responsibilities we have, to ban military weapons of any sort.

    1. I disagree, because we can't have a terrorist with more firepower than our own police. We need to control the criminals and not let them control us.

    2. Honestly I am right and military weapons are dangerous.

  11. I also agree with you. Police and schools having military weapons can really backfire on us! Also, I agree that we would feel unsafe in a country where police have big, scary military weapons.

  12. I am 50/50 on this. I believe that, in some cases, certain areas should be protected by military weaponry, depending on what they are protecting. Some schools are not safe, according to state news in that area, and they should be protected by regular weaponry. Being protected by military weaponry shows that most of the people are dangerous.
