Tensions Increase Between South and North Korea

Article Summary

The second exchange of gunfire between South and North Korea happened on Sunday.  This was after leaflets of freedom propaganda where dropped across the border into North Korea.  A meeting was held to discuss disagreements between the two countries in a town on the border.  North Korea has warned the South Korean government to stop these leaflets, which encourage north citizens to overthrow Kim Jong Un. South Korea says the activists are using their freedom of speech, which cannot be stopped.  South Korean activists are keeping their vows to keep sending the leaflets.  North Korea has warned to use stronger measures if the activists don't stop.

Analysis

I think this isn't a smart choice for South Korea because it threatens their safety and the safety of American troops.  With about 28,500 U.S. troops along the border, it is extremely unsafe for both citizens and troops, with the incoming threats.

Discussion Questions

Do you think the South Korean Government's choice is right? Why or why not?
What do you think about the U.S. troops being stationed there?
What do you think will happen next?

  1. I agree how it wasn't s smart choice on South Korea's part. They should have talked to other countries and seen if it was a good idea before just going forth with a plan that might not even work.

    1. I also agree with your response because they just came up with a plan and didn't ask for other opinions. They don't even know for sure whether it's a good plan or a bad plan.

  2. I feel that the South Korean government isn't wrong about what they're doing, but it's also not the right way to go about this. Both countries are free to do what they want, so South Korea can put leaflets into North Korea if they want to, but North Korea also has every right to respond to that in any way they see fit.

  3. I agree that it was not a smart choice for South Korea because the idea that they have may not work. And this is really unsafe for everyone including the troops and people living near the border in Korea.

  4. I think that is dangerous for them to be on the boarder, but it is also just as or if not more dangerous than them not being there.

  5. I think South Korea should stop doing this because North Korea may attack them and hurt them and our US troops. If the South Koreans stop this then North Korea wont attack them.

  6. Back in Asia we used to hear new about North/South Korea all the time, and the news had always startled everyone. I disagree with both countries, since North Korea shouldn't use violence to settle things out, and South Korea should mind their own business, because there are already many American troops guarding the border between them.

  7. The leaflets being dropped are not controlled by the South Korean government. They are being dropped by South Korean activists. So to stop the activists would be a human rights violation. Thus the South Korean government must tell the North they simply cannot stop it.
