NFL says Chiefs’ Husain Abdullah shouldn’t have been penalized for slide, prayer in end zone
Summary:
Husain Abdullah a Kansas City Chiefs NFL player was penalized for celebrating and intercepted touch down by praying to god in his own Islamic way. His celebration drew a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. NFL officials said that you cannot be penalized for celebrating in a religious way. However, Tim Tebow was famously known for his pose. Some people now call Husains pose "Abdulling"
Analysis:
I think that this isn't fair because if other players are allowed to pray while scoring a touchdown then why should Islam be denied as a celebration after a touchdown. Even in the NFL rule book players are not allowed to celebrate on the ground unless it is for a religious reason and Husian was still penalized
Discussion questions:
1) Do you agree with the refs decision
2) Should Husain have been penalized
3) do you think the refs will call the same penalty again
I agree with Adam, it isn't fair that Islam was denied a celebration after a touchdown, and the player even got penalized. If other players are allowed to pray, then why can't Husain Abdullah.
ReplyDeleteIt was not fair to penalize a person for expressing their beliefs. It is only made worse by the fact the Tim Tebow is famous for doing just that. Americans deserve to express themselves if they want to. It is not fair to discriminate against someone just because they believe in something. The refs should have treated his celebration like any other.
ReplyDeleteAdam, I agree with you because if Tim Tebow was allowed to pray then Abdullah should have been allowed as well. It doesnt matter what way you pray or what religion you practice because it is still a celebration prayer either way.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with the refs penalty. I think that the call they made was bad. He waas so happy that he got down and thanked God.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that it was fair how they penalized him. Tim Tebow was really famous for praying on the field, so why can't Husain do it?

ReplyDeleteI do not agree with the ref's decision because it was unfair to stop and penalize a religious prayer. If Tebow can do his own pose, then why can't Abdullah?
ReplyDeleteI think that the refs' decision is for sure a controversial one. The call made by the refs should be a lesson to set the standards for celebration by the athletes. Refs have let certain celebrations slide in the past, yet this time after Abdullah's debatable religious one, the refs made the call against him. I think there should have been more debate and opinions considered before the call was made. I think both the NFL and its athletes will be much more cautious when it comes time to athletic celebrations.
ReplyDeleteI think that it must have been a misunderstanding with the refs. They probably didn't know that what he was doing was a prayer. By the NFL rules it would have been excessive celebration if it weren't a prayer so there is no need for controversy.
ReplyDeleteI believe that even the fact that they brought this to a court is foolish. What ever happened to that one amendment? Freedom of religion or something along those lines. Is the problem the fact that it was on live TV? If so don't other players do similar things when they score a touchdown? I don't watch a lot of sports but from what I've seen, I'm fairly certain of that fact.
