Racial segregation/injustices of the past significantly affect society today because Black people are stuck in a cycle of poverty. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because both countries have economic and social inequailty but are different because of the scale of what is going on. “When whites just don’t get it” states that “Slavery and Post-Slavery oppression left a legacy of poverty, broken families, racism, …” This shows how people are still stuck in a cycle of poverty from the time of slaves that is hard to get out of. The Long Shadow of Apartheid Article says that “Most teachers in South Africa’s schools got inferior education under the Bantu system” This also shows how people in South Africa are stuck in a cycle of bad education, this one more recent.
ReplyDeleteIn America, racial injustices still affect people today because even after slavery was ended, there was a lot of racial injustice. It wasn’t until in the past 50 years where blacks actually got the same rights as whites. This still affects us now because it takes more than 50 years for racism to truly be gone and for everyone to really be equal. In the article “When whites Just Don’t Get It”, Nicholas Kristof states that “Slavery and post-slavery oppression has left a legacy of broken families, poverty, racism, hopelessness and internalized self-doubt.”. In South Africa, apartheid, which ended more recently than segregation did in America, still affects the blacks there because the whites are in better neighborhoods and have a better education system and better houses and are basically wealthier than the blacks. The United States is so similar to Africa that What we have now could sort of be considered as what the future holds for Africa, because after the blacks became equal under the constitution, it took a long time for them to truly be equal, it still is definately not perfect and there is a lot of progress left for both countries.
ReplyDeleteRacial injustices of the past have somewhat affected the society today because of the things mentioned in the article “When Whites Just Don’t Get It” by Nicholas Kristof. It mentiones the comparisons between the whites and blacks in America of social standards. For example, in line (11) it says, “The gap has worsened in the last decade, and the United States now has a greater wealth gap by race than South Africa during apartheid. This shows the racial injustice issues that the United States is facing. In addition, in the article, “Apartheid’s Long Shadow”, on line (49-70), it says that One of every seven adults in South Africa is infected with HIV, has violent crime rates, and has worse educational systems. I think that there is a difference, but not a great difference. There still is racial injustices in America and South Africa to an extent, like the things I mentioned earlier throughout this article summary.

ReplyDeleteRacial segregation of the past significant effects society today because people still are racist and doing the same things that were done in the past and doing them now, even though now there are laws against this it is still a problem. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are very similar/somewhat similar because both countries have segregation and racism but are different because in America blacks and whites are allowed to go to the same schools and in Africa they usually go to different schools according to the article Apartheid’s long shadow.
For example in the article When whites just don’t get it, it states there is racism in America but it shows how different people may act different around blacks when that person is white. And is show how whites are usually smarter than blacks. This shows that in Africa the blacks are treated differently than they are in America.
I think the education and political systems of the U.S. and South africa are unfair and racialy bias. Racial segregation significantly affect society today because in the past both the U.S. and South Africa had segregation. Today in the U.S. the effect includes, an unjust education system and unfair government. Education affects how much each person makes from a job. “The net worth of an average black household in the U.S. is $6,314, compared with $110,500 for an average white household, according to the 2011 census data.” This shows how large the gap is today between black and white incomes. South Africa still feels the effects of the apartheid especially in the education system too. Even President Zuma said, “have not essentially led to the delivery of quality education for the poorest of the poor.” This shows how even their government is not proud of the inequality in the education system.
ReplyDeleteRacial segregation of the past significantly affects society today because they think that everything we do has to do with all things that they get in trouble for and for their bad education. The effects on the United States and South Africa today are somewhat similar because both countries have troubles with education for blacks but are different because some blacks have jobs and good education because they would try. For example Nancy said “We can’t fix their problems. It’s up to every black individual to stop the cycle of fatherless homes, stop the cycle of generations of welfare.” This proves that they rely on us to fix their problems. They choose to not do the right things and do the bad things, either to be cool over getting good grades in school. Also because the unemployment rate is 22%.
ReplyDeleteRacial injustice of the past somewhat affect society today because although segregation has been abolished, people are still racist and tend to lean towards their own race when it comes to differences in race. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because both countries have racial injustice but are different because segregation in America has been banned and there is still segregation in South Africa. For example, Nicholas Kristof stated “The United States now has a greater wealth gap by race than South Africa did during the apartheid.” This shows that people with different races are definitely treated differently when it comes to the economy. In addition, Apartheid’s long Shadow stated, “The country [South Africa] also suffers from high rates of violent crime.” This proves that the United States is different from South Africa because although there is violent crime in America, there isn’t a very high rate of violent crime.
ReplyDeleteRacial segregation of the past have significantly affect society today since the society has been shaped for people to believe in stereotypes and produce hate amongst others causing our society to go apart because of racial inequality. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because both countries have been through a time where segregation was highly important to the dominant race, and both countries are a bit different because South Africa today doesn't have that many racial groups living together, while the Unites States does. For example, just like what Masixole Mabetshe said in the article “Apartheid's Long Shadow”, “We kept waiting, and there was no action”, states that South Africans have been waiting for proper education by the right people, but no signs of help were shown to them at all. In the United states, most people can get a proper education if they want to get one or not, but not everyone gets equal rights and privileges because of their race. In the article “When Whites Just Don’t Get It”, it states that "some readers will protest that the stereotype is rooted in reality: Young black men are disapproving likely to be criminals", and in both America and South Africa, some stereotypes are true. But those stereotypes are true because of how we see reality, and once we see the past we can realize why those stereotypes are true. For example, Africans might have a high crime rate because they didn't get proper education when they were young. This is why we should start to recognize that what had happened before highly affects what is happening now, and it's not just for the apartheid in South Africa and segregation in America, but for many more.
ReplyDeleteRacial injustices of the past had a bad effect on society today because racism and segregation is still happening today in the laws and education. South Africa and the USA are similar because there is racism and segregation in both countries and the education for blacks is bad in both countries. For example in the Whites Don’t Get It “African Americans on Welfare heard only 29% as many words in their first years as children of professional parents”. This causes a serious literacy gap between blacks and whites. This shows that racial injustices have a bad effect on today because there are serious education gaps between races. In Apartheids Long Shadow Masixole Mabetshe said “We kept waiting and there was no action.” He had failed his exams and in unemployed. This shows that South Africa and the USA are similar because they are both struggling to provide proper education to blacks.
ReplyDeleteRacial segregation somewhat affect society today because black people still are being affected by apartheid. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because both countries have have people of different races and each of these places has people who have their own opinions about race.
ReplyDeleteFor example in the article When White Just Don’t Get It states “It’s also true that %99.9 percent of blacks were not arrested and charged with robbery in 2012”. This shows that even though factually blacks didn’t rob and banks they still have the bad rep. In addition the article Apartheid’s Long Shadow states “Teachers say children get to high school not knowing their multiplication tables. This proves that blacks get a way worse education because the typical American knows their multiplication tables at 4th grade.
Racial segregation of the past significantly affect society today because racism still occurs today, even when the apartheid ended in the US and South Africa. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because both countries have social inequality but are different because of the far more recent apartheid in South Africa and the scale they’re at compared to the US. For example, When Whites Just Don’t Get It states, “in a network of 100 friends, a white person, on average, has one black friend” (31-32). Just like the US, South Africans are usually separated by whites, which is basically what this quote is saying about the US. But they are different because the apartheid ending much later than slavery did. The article, Apartheid’s Long Shadow, explains, “Apartheid officially ended in 1991,” (36) which is much longer than when slavery ended in the US in 1865, although the civil rights movement lasted until 1954, which is still a great amount of time between the two countries.

ReplyDeleteRacial injustices of the past significantly affect society today because it shaped people’s beliefs on what race was superior and which were inferior. The effects on the United States and South Africa today are somewhat similar because both countries have segregation but are different because in American society blacks are looked upon as lesser beings than whites. In the Article “When Whites Just Don't Get It”, it says “...but they've often been on a trajectory toward failure from the time they were babies.” This shows how many whites have the opinion that blacks are failures and should not be treated as equally. These beliefs were all shaped around the time of Apartheid and even before then during slave times. In addition, “Apartheid’s Long Shadow” said “African children consistently score at or near the bottom of the international achievement tests.” This proves that due to the lack of education in South Africa, many whites in America believe the same about the black citizens here in the US.
Racial Segregation of the past significantly affect society because the justice systems and education in the U.S demonstrates that Whites were treated and are treated better than Blacks. U.S and South Africa are similar because education and justice systems aren't fair to Blacks and the difference is that the U.S has overall made sure racial feeling towards Blacks have been solved as best as the government can. In the article Apartheid’s long shadow, Celia Dugger says,” In a nation that was then 70 percent black, a white minority rules, denying blacks basic rights and essentially treating them as aliens in their own land”(24-27).This quote shows that in South Africa there is still racial segregation in justice systems even after Apartheid ended. In the article When Whites Just Don’t get it, Nicholas says,”The best escalator to opportunity may be education, but that escalator is broken for black boys growing up in neighborhoods with broken schools. We fail those boys before they fail us”(42-43). Just like in the U.S blacks have a way harder time getting proper education because of the family they were born into. Ways and ideas can change and blacks in both South Africa and the U.S can start taking responsibility of their actions and stop committing so much crime and focus more on the generations to come and how they can better themselves.
ReplyDeleteThe racial injustices of the past significantly helped create the unjust society. America and South Africa have somewhat similar in their unjust societies, because the schools for black students are often in poor condition. The “When Whites Just Don’t Get It” article stated that, “Those kids never catch up, partly because they’re more likely to attend broken schools.” “Apartheid's Long Shadow” states “the problem that may pose the greatest challenge to South Africa’s future is its education system.” These articles state that the school for black students are horrible. The schools were set up during the times of segregation of each country and are still poor today. This proves that race still matters in society.
ReplyDeleteI think that racial segregation has a somewhat affect on South Africa. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because both countries have some form of racism but are different because in South Africa, they don’t get as many privileges as we do, and they (blacks) also get in trouble more compared to the whites.
ReplyDeleteFor example the seniors in South Africa protested outside the staff lounge because their accounting teacher had once again failed to show up for class. The United States Sentencing Commission concluded that black men get sentences one-fifth longer than white men for committing the same crimes. A study in Louisiana found that a person is 97% more likely to be sentenced to death for murdering a white person than a black person.
racial segregation in the past affected society today because the social gap between whites and black is the biggest it's ever been. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are very similar because both countries segregated blacks and whites at one point and Africa is going through what America has been going through ever since slavery was abolished.
ReplyDeleteFor example When whites just don't get it states “The white-black income is roughly 40% greater today than it was in 1967” (line 14). This shows that whites and blacks are economically different because their gap is so big.
Another example in Apartheids long shadow states “South Africas schools today has its roots in Apartheid” (line 21 and 22). This quote shows that Aparthied still hasnt completely left in South Aftica
ReplyDeleteRacial injustices of the past have somewhat affected society today because of the events and ideas that were formed back in those days and is still going on because of how the education is occurring. The effects on the United States and South Africa today are somewhat similar because in South Africa, most schools have a greater percentage of blacks and a small percentage of whites. In the United States, some schools I know in Chicago, have 80% white and 20% black and then it’s the opposite in some schools. The difference in education is that in South Africa, most of the schools don’t have good resources to be successful. In the United States, we have better resources and better opportunities.
For example, in the article “Apartheids Long Shadow” lines 71-72, it talks about how the schools have broken windows and only share a single textbook. Also in the article “When Whites Just Don’t Get It”lines 62-63, it talks about how the reason many kids don’t do well in school is because they are attending “broken schools”. In the United States,we still have many broken schools with unreliable resources. The main effect that takes on these things is the economy. This shows that the racial injustices of the past still affects us now especially in education.

ReplyDeleteRacial segregation of the past somewhat affects society today because of the unequal education systems and the unjust jobs. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because both countries have racial inequalities despite the fact that racism has been outlawed. Although, the countries are different because based on articles dealing with the topic of racial segregation in South Africa and the United States, the United States is more motivated to get rid of racial ideas and images. In addition, “Apartheid’s long shadow” lines 21-27 state that “The inequality that persists in South Africa’s schools today has its roots in apartheid...denying blacks basic rights and essentially treating them as aliens in their own land.” This proves that the idea of whites being superior created during apartheid lingered on to this day and it affects school systems. Similarly, “When Whites Just Don’t Get It” line 14 said “The black-white income gap is roughly 40 percent greater today than it was in 1967.” This demonstrates the unfair job incomes that have remained from the 1960s and have even worsened.
ReplyDeleteRacial segregation/injustices of the past significantly affect society today because the systems in society are very similar to how they were when there were Jim Crow laws. The effects on the United States and South Africa’s today are somewhat similar because both countries have high crime rates, and very different school systems, but are different because ours are no where near as bad as South Africa’s. This is shown in both of articles.
ReplyDeleteRacial segregation in South Africa and the United States in the past significantly affect society today. Even though apartheid is over with in some cases whites are still superior to blacks. The United States and Africa are alike in some ways but mostly they are different. They are similar because their education systems are not equal for blacks. The difference between the two countries is that the United States tries to fix their racial problems. “In a nation that was then 70% black, a white minority ruled, denying blacks basic rights and essentially treating them as aliens in their own land” (lines 24-27). This quote shows that blacks were not treated equal because even in their homeland they were treated differently. In the United States there is still racial segregation, but we try try to fix it everyday. “The countries education policies have not essentially led to the delivery of quality education for the poorest of the poor”(lines 68-69). This quote backs up my statement on how South Africa isn’t trying to fix itself. If the president is aware that the education isn’t up to standards then shouldn’t he be trying to fix it? This shows how racial segregation is still present in this day and age.
