Revolt Against Corporal Punishment

SUMMARY
In the article, some teachers explain that corporal punishment is a very bad thing to do to children because it is just abuse when a student does something wrong. While other teachers believe that corporal punishment is needed in all states. For example, Kavanaugh, a fifth-grade teacher, has refused to hit a child, for her entire career. She argued that it was unjust and it was breaking the 8th amendment, Protection against cruel and unusual punishment. The main idea for this article is that teachers are for and against corporal punishment, and some teachers are bringing it to court.

ANALYSIS:
I agree with the teachers that are against corporal punishment. I am against it because physically hurting someone because of something they did, will not resolve the issue, if anything it will do the opposite of improve their behavior. The article reminded me of child abuse. If child abuse is illegal, then why would corporal punishment be legal? I feel that corporal punishment or any kind of physical discipline is wrong and should be illegal.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
How do you feel about physical discipline?
What would you do if our school used corporal punishment?
Would you like to keep corporal punishment legal? Or make it illegal?

  1. Physical punishment should only be used to teach a lesson. If you're not teaching the person a lesson and just hurting them for the sake of them doing something bad without telling whats good and bad, then you're not using it properly.

  2. I agree, if child abuse is illegal corporal punishments should be too. Teachers should use other punishments to deter bad behavior from misbehaving students. I also agree that it is against the 8th amendment. Why wasn't it outlawed with child abuse?

  3. I agree completely about banning corporal punishment, because it is morally wrong and is the same thing as abuse. Like you said, keeping this illegal is the right thing to do.

  5. I fully agree with teachers that physical punishment is complexly wrong. Harming students physically will not fix anything and only make a student more rebellious.

  6. Child abuse is not okay under any circumstances. It is one thing to discipline a child, but if you go to far it is not okay. There are more effective ways to discipline children. It can be done without physically harming the kids. The punishment reward system works very well, so long as the punishment does not involve harming the child or children who need discipline.

  7. I highly disagree with physical discipline, and although students may learn from their actions after physical discipline, they still shouldn't be hit or abused by their teachers. Some teachers may abuse their students more harsh than others, which will be unfair and would make the students feel bad about themselves.
