Background
In the article, Ferguson Sets Broad Change for City Courts, the reporters explain how the event of a white police officer shooting a black man affects the city of Ferguson. Reporters have discovered that there are a lot more arrest warrants in Ferguson than any other city in St.Louis. Also that Ferguson is about 75% black and their mayor and people on the council are all white. This is because only a small part of the population in the city is voting for mayor and positions on the council. A large percentage of young black men are unemployed and are battling a cycle of unpaid tickets and arrest warrants. For every 1,000 people in Ferguson 1,500 arrest warrants are being given out. This is an overwhelming number. There are many issues that have set off civil unrest after Michael Brown, 18, was killed by a white officer.
The shooting in Ferguson brought out many old issues between black and white people. Black people feel as though they had been discriminated against and this contributed to the rage that drove the protests over Michael Brown. There continue to be various events for blacks to protest against the way they are treated. They protest for possible change in discrimination of Blacks. I feel that the white officer was wrong to shoot Michael Brown. Though I cannot make very many conclusions because investigators are still gathering information about that shooting and determining whether the case in going to be taken to court. I do think discrimination against blacks is still occurring today. There are many cases that people think if that was a white man would results have been different.
- Do you think the police officer should have shot Michael Brown?
- Are circumstances in Ferguson going to change?
- Is discrimination of Black people something the U.S needs to address more carefully?

I think it was wrong of the police officer to shoot Michael because it might be a sign of discrimination and also he could have handled it a better way then to shoot him. I also think the circumstances might change according to the evidence police might find and the explanations that come along with them. I think the U.S does need to be more aware of that because this is not the first article I and many have read about a white officer shooting a black mam.
ReplyDeleteI feel that in america blacks are still discriminated against and that the government should do something more to try to stop it. I think this article really shows this is an issue and something else should be done.
ReplyDeleteI think it was wrong for a police officer to shoot Michael Brown because police officers are supposed to help people and not start more chaos. The circumstances might change when the police find out more information. This has been a problem in the US for a while and people need to step up and make a change to it.
ReplyDeleteI think that it was very wrong to shoot Michael they could have made a different approach towards him instead of shooting him. I do think there is a lot of discrimination towards black people but nothing to out of hand.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there is still discrimination against blacks in the US as well as other countries. Discrimination is not like a disease, we can't find a cure. I agree that it was wrong for the policeman to shoot Michael Brown because this is causing much more uprising than there was before. This will only bring us back to the Civil Rights Movement. We might not be able to get rid of discrimination forever, but we could do things that keep it from occurring so often, and shooting Michael just made things worse.
ReplyDeleteWell first of all, we need to know why he shot Michael Brown; as you said we cannot conclude a reason for the shooting, as the police are still gathering information about the event that occurred. Second of all, this goes back to the first point, we need to know more information about the event, as there is inadequate information to answer this question currently. The circumstances could change depending on what else the information was found. Also, maybe this is not discrimination. Maybe the blacks, as mentioned, are not complying with the civil rules; such as; not paying debts, getting arrest warrants. Although, maybe the police are penalizing them for this. I this is a punishment, then it would be considered unfair. They should at least talk about the situation with them. Third of all, then again, we need more information to find out whether or not this is true discrimination; or to just find out more about the shooting and the cause of it. Otherwise, I think that the U.S. does need to address this more carefully. They need to gather all of the information and determine upon it whether is is true discrimination, and why the shooting occurred; in more depth. Also, they should try to work things out, as a police authority, in a more civil way; after all these blacks; whether or not they comply with the rules; are still under their authority as citizens.
ReplyDeleteI think that, overall, these circumstances are going to change, especially when there is more information gathered.
DeleteI believe that it is very wrong for an officer of the law to harm a person in any way, let alone kill someone. Police officers have been trusted with a lethal weapon and we about police officers taking advantage of having a gun and shooting people. It is very sad. I think that the discrimination in some places is very wrong and taken to extremes. We will find out more about the shooting and then we could fully assess this situation.
ReplyDeleteI think that it was wrong the police to shoot him, but also if the case was that Micheal did mean to hurt the police or was resisting then I think that the police should have to right to shoot him maybe in the foot to slow him down, but since the police was not under these circumstances I think it was wrong to shoot Micheal!
ReplyDeleteThe circumstances may change on how people see this, bad or good. But honestly it probably will get worse as the days go on if the public keep acting this way as if killing people is the polices fault. It was probably just self defense.
ReplyDeleteI think is very wrong for the police to shoot Michael Brown. The police didn't do any justice by shooting the man. In ferguson, almost all of the police is white. Discrimination against blacks is a very big issue in ferguson, and blacks a accused way more often than whites. I don't believe that Brown intended any harm towards the police.
