  2. I believe that Imperialism was beneficial for Africa because it gave Africa more religious and Economic opportunity.
According to Trevor Lloyd, South Saharan Exports went from about 2.5 million (pounds) to 21 million. (Doc G) This is a huge explosion in trade that was caused by Imperialism. That shows how beneficial it was for Europeans to stimulate Africa's economy.
According to a photograph, in 1925 in Angola Africans were practicing Methodism. (Doc C) Previously they were not aware of this religion, so it was a result of imperialism that they were taught to worship that way. This is another example of how Imperialism benefited the Africans.

  4. Overall imperialism was bad for Africa because because it shows in the back round slaves working and gathering the herbs for the tea and this is because of Europeans forcing them to work(doc B). Another example is when David Livingston talks about his experience in Africa when he went there and how sad it was for him to see how the Africans were treated(doc E). These where the intellectual and economic effects of imperialism.

  5. Imperialism had a positive effect on Africa because Europeans helped civilize Africans and helped stop the slave trade. In the Pears Soap advertisement it states that Europeans helped civilize Africans by helping them learn to clean themselves [ Doc A]. This has a positive effect because it is teaching Africans how to live a healthy life. David Livingstone, a missionary and a traveler helped abolish the desolating slave trade of Central Africa [ Doc B]. This has a positive effect on Africa because European travelers helped to abolish the slave trade and stopped the horrible crime.

  6. I think imperialism can depend on what they're doing to the country. If they come to the country and colonize it, then tell everyone to believe in their beliefs and if they don't, they will die. Or they wouldn't allow citizens to not have a freedom of speech or opinion on the things the government does. If they come to the country and colonize it and give them free protection and resources to help grow and support the country, then that's fine. But if they're just using them to get resources for the colonizers home country, and not give them any help or support against upcoming enemies, then they're just using that country and not helping them at all. So it really depends if it's good to colonize or not. If you're colonizing that country to help and support it, by expanding your regions, then it's fine. But if you just come to the country and tell them to do your bidding, believe in your beliefs, and have no open right or opinion, then you're doing it wrong. You shouldn't ruin their way of life for your own benefits. You should help the colony and as it grows you can get a profit or materials for all of your colonies. So don't force religion on your colonies, nor should to force social standards on them either. David Livingstone says before he died that he wanted the slave trade to be abolished to "Heal this open sore of the world." (Doc. E) You should give your colony with support, giving them knowledge and schools, this picture of a middle class man teaching poor Africans at a Sunday school shows this (Doc. C).

  7. I believe imperialism was positive overall because it helped spread ideas and created a boost in the African economy. In document G, written by Trevor Owen Lloyd, shows how much of an increase there was in exports from Africa. This would be a good thing for the African economy and would give jobs to the African people. On corbis.org, the picture shows a Methodist Church in Angola Africa. This proves how religion and new ideas where being spread through Africa. (doc C) Both of these documents show how ideas spread and how the African economy was boosted, in a positive effect.

  8. I believe that Imperialism is a positive for Africa, because economically when the British were taking over places from Cape to Cairo they could be helping the Africans to live a better life (Doc D). Also stated by David Livingstone, a European explorer and missionary, socially he was trying to help Africa with the movement of abolishing slave trade. He wanted to take control and try to make everyone equal to also have a better life (Doc E).

  9. Imperialism is positive because it has many economic, and religious aspects. In the statement Trevor Owen Lloyd, shows a type of economy because the graph shows all of the imports and exports Africa is gaining and losing. This shows that imperialism is positive because it helps look at what they have and how much they have and what they need. (Doc G)

According to picture from CORBIS.COM shows a sign of popular religions are being shown. The picture shoes a Methodist Sunday school class taking place. They have their own religious beliefs which is positive because it helps them still believe in what they think is right and reasonable. (Doc C)

  10. Imperialism was negative based on the documents provided. Europeans helped employ Africans with no job. By working for this company Africans would earn enough money to provide for their families and live comfortably (Doc B) Also a lot of courageous Europeans, like David Livingstone, spent their time trying to abolish slavery and help Africa become a civilized well run Continent which was great for Africa. Also he tried to persuade other people to do the same(Doc E)

  11. I believe that European imperialism in Africa had a negative affect overall. The picture of a European man teaching what he thinks is a better religion to the Africans shows a negative affect because nobody's religion is perfect and people should have the right to believe in whatever they want. (Document C) According to The Routleage Atlas of African American History, almost every country in Africa was colonized by Europeans. This shows a negative affect because only one colony was left under it's own rule and in any given continent, most if not all of the countries should be under their own rule.(document F)

  12. Imperialism was had a negative effect on Africa because of the overpowering Europeans and foreigners' down takes on Africa. Politically, Europeans believed they had the need to colonize Africa and take over their political system, according to "The Rhodes Colossus" (Doc. D). Europeans also thought they should assist in intellectually advancing Africans' education. Additionally, according to the Pears' Soap advertisement and Rudyard Kipling, Europeans believed they were superior to Africans and that they needed to civilize the Africans (Doc. A). Imperialism negatively affected Africa by other nations' attempts to take over.

  13. There were both negative and positive effects on Imperialism in Africa. I think that Imperialism has more negative effects than positive effects. I think this, because Britain used much of their resources. On the graph, it shows that there was a lot more exports than imports. (Doc G) This could mean that they used much of their resources to get that amount of exports. There isn't anything wrong with exporting a lot, but how they didn't get many imports, shows that Africans had to make enough for themselves, and enough to give away. Another negative effect is how Africans were treated. In the advertisement of Pears' Soap, they were saying how Africans were Half-devil and half-child. The advertisement also said that they "caught their new people." (Doc A) This shows just a few of the many negative effects of Imperialism.

  14. I think Imperialism was a positive thing for Africa. They are kind of insulted them, but what they meant was to clean them up with the soap. Africa did not have very good hygiene during this time, so they were doing a good thing by cleaning them up (Doc A)

Europeans build schools for African's this was a very good thing because before Africans typically did not have any education at all. Some students were even sent off to secondary school.(Doc C)

A negative thing was that they believe they were superior and treated the Africans as less than them. This affected the Africans socially because they were insulted and humiliated.(Doc D)

They were force to work for the Europeans. They were paid very little to work very hard labor. This was a economic effect. (Doc B)

  15. According to "Former European Colony 1900" Africa was almost completely taken over by European governments, which proves that Europeans had little control over their government. (Document F). Pear's Soap Advertisement and Rudyard Kipling Europeans believed that they were superior to Africans and that its was their duty to civilize Africans. Both of these documents prove that Europeans felt that they were better than Africans and that they had full rights to do whatever they pleased with African land and people.

  16. I think that Imperialism was a negative thing for the Africans. Many religions and cultures were not allowed for Africans to practice. This was not fair for Africans because if the Europeans were allowed to practice what they liked, then Africans should to. (Doc C)

Africans were also put down because Europeans were not treating them well and they thought they were dirty, or impure. In Britain there was a advertisement, for cleaning Africans. That is wrong. (Doc A)

  17. Overall Imperialism was good for Africa economically and socially. According to the epitaph of David Livingstone, he did what he could for the betterment of Africa
(Doc E). He explored Africa, tried to end slavery and help Africans learn. This means he had good intentions and, therefore had a positive affect on Africa. According to the Pears' Soap ad and the poem by Rudyard Kipling, Europeans though it was there duty to help Africans learn and become civilized
(Doc A). Despite the fact that Europeans thought they were superior to Africans, they still wanted to help the Africans improve their way of life.

  18. I believe that Imperialism actually benefited Africa because it helped them socially, economically, religiously, and politically.
While some may argue that from a political stance, the Europeans "took over" and "controlled" Africa, I think that they actually helped reform Africa for the better. The Europeans helped Africa gain in their amount of exports into the continent. The exports to Africa increased rapidly bcause other areas wanted to help them and improve their countries. (Document G) Intellectually, the Africans gained knowledge on the Eurpopean Methodist ways and this probably improved their learning skills and taught them valuable information which probably helped them understand the Europeans better. This shows how Imperialism benefited Africa

  19. Overall I believe imperialism was negative for Africa. I think it was negative because of the way Europeans enforced many things. The main ideas that help support that imperialism was awful are how Africans were treated when it came to religion and social equality. The effects of religion are shown in a picture of a Methodist sunday School. In Africa they had to have separate churches for the blacks and whites or even the Europeans wouldn’t let them practice their religion(Doc C). I believe it would made many Africans angry when they weren’t allowed to practice what they wanted, when Europeans could do whatever they wanted to. Another reason why imperialism was bad is the social equality, according to the Pear’s soap advertisement, and Rudyard Kipling, Europeans believed they were superior to Africans (Doc A). When people think they are more superior to someone else, they start treating them poorly. This why imperialism was bad and how it was effected people religiously and socially.

  20. Finish for world cutures: There are a lot of good effects for European imperialism. The political benefits in accordance to Former European Colony, are mainly pertaining to the change of culture, this change was for the better because Europeans brought in many new ideals and different ways of life that had there forth influenced much of Africa (DOC F). The Economic effects are, according to the graph, British and Africa Imports and exports, the graph shows that Europe was sending a lot more materials then Africa was sending them (DOC G). The Religious benefits are, in the Remembrance of David Livingstone a European Explorer, he was quoted saying that everyone has a chance at heaven no matter their race or history (DOC E). Socially, according to Pears Soap add, Europeans believed that they could teach the Africans about how to be civilized (DOC A). Intellectually, in Amethyst Sunday school, the picture depicts Africans being taught be Europeans who are much more advance then when the Africans where when they where first found (DOC C).

  21. Overall I believe that imperialism had a negative affect on Africa based on the documents. According to Pears Soap advertisement in (doc A) Africa is a dirty and lower class country. The advertisement mad Africa seem like the people were all like animals and stated "dark conners of the earth" saying they are black and not as important. Another document that supports that imperialism was negative was document D. This picture represents a huge Britain man standing on Africa acting like if he wasn't standing strong and holding Africa up it would fall to pieces. Without Britain Africa would be who they are today (Doc D).

  22. Overall I think that imperialism had a negative effect on the Africans. The Europeans had not just "claimed" Africa of its own, but also tried to change their culture, which is unfair to the Africans. The map in document F shows the colonies in Africa during 1900. A vast majority of the continent was colonized by the Europeans, and by that the Africans had also got most of their freedom taken away by them. In document C, it shows the Africans going to a Methodist Sunday School in Angola. The Africans were possibly forced into going to Sunday school, which had affected them religiously, since the Europeans may have wanted them to change their religion. As you can see in the picture it also shows some of the Africans wearing clothes that weren't part of their culture, and instead were European clothing. These two documents prove that imperialism had more of a negative effect for the Africans

  23. I think that, overall, Imperialism had a negative affect on Africa by taking away the African's resources, as well as other ways.
The overall Imperialism has a political negative affects because of many things. First of all, the act of Imperialism is, after all, going into another country by force. Thus, taking away that country's freedom, and state. Soon, the countries that are coming into Africa and colonizing will want to take over, and gain more land. For example, in the document shown by "The Rhodes Colossus", they want to make Africa "all British from Cape to Cairo". (Doc D, 1892).
Second of all, Imperialism had social negative affects on Africa because the Europeans thought that certain things about themselves and the Africans, making them showing ethnocentrism. The Europeans had certain beliefs. They thought that the Europeans were generally better than the Africans. In fact, they thought that the Africans were lower than them, therefore treating them as lower beings. For example, in the document shown by Pears' Soap Advertisement, and Rudyard Kipling, they show that the Africans were less civilized, and that the Europeans would need to "clean the Africans", so that the Africans could become more civilized. (Doc A, 1899).
In conclusion, I think that the act of Imperialism has had a negative affect on Africa.

  24. European imperialism on Africa effected negatively because of European's political and social ideas. According to the map seen on Document F, almost all of Africa was colonized by other countries, most of them were colonized by Europe. This is explaining how Europeans believed that Africans did not have great political standards and had to change their government. This explains how the Europeans were not helping Africa, but changing the country to a "better lifestyle". The social affects also resulted in the negative outbreak. According to Pear's Soap and Rudyard Kipling, Europeans were superior to Africans because they didn't even know how to clean themselves. They explained how they were like animals and that they shouldn't not be clean, which to them is "uncivilized". The results negatively because the Europeans were not helping them because they needed it, they were helping them become a new type of race, hopefully one just like themselves. In conclusion, I believe that European Imperialism on Africa reflected negatively because of their social and political outbreaks.

  25. I think that Imperialism affected Africa positively because of the European's Intellectual and Social plans. According to Corbis.com, Europeans made western schools to educate the illiterate (Doc C). This shows how the Europeans effected Africa Intellectually by wasting their own time to educate another continent. This also shows that Europeans were not being racist to them but they were trying to educate them so they could get better opertunities in the future. The social effects helped Africa improve a lot. According to Rudyard Kipling, The Europeans made soaps to not be racist but took the responsibility to teach them how to shower and stay clean (Doc A). This shows how the Europeans affected Africa socially by spending their money to keep not only Africa but, the whole world clean. This also shows that the Europeans have nothing against them but they just want to help them in all possible ways. I belive Imperialism affected Africa in a positive way.
