It started from Ancient Greece and then slowing beginning to spread through religion, wars, and art. A religion example is ancient Egypt, where each egyptian god had a corresponding greek god with similar powers. A war example is ancient Rome. When the romans conquered Greece they fancied the religion and the civilization so they adopted the same gods and myths. The reason why mythology spread so widely is because it was a big part of the civilization and lifestyle. The arts were myths, theater, religion, festivals, and even the Olympic Games, all had to do with a myth or another.
During the 18th century reaction against Greek myth spread throughout Europe, the myths provided an important source of material for artists, poets, operas and more. By the end of the 18th century Romanticism started a surge of enthusiasm for all things related to Greek, including Greek Mythology. American authors during the 19th century said that the study of the classical myths were essential to the understanding of English and American literature.
