China and US greenhouse gas agreement

http://magazines.scholastic.com/news/2014/11/A-Historic-Climate-Agreement

Summary:
Recently Earth's temperature and weather patterns have shifted. This is an issue because it is causing major ice sheets around the world to melt, which then causes sea levels to rise, resulting in coastal flooding. The agreement between China and U.S. comes as a big step in the right direction because these two countries together produce 1/3 of global greenhouse-gas emissions. President Obama agreed that the U.S. will cut out greenhouse-gas emissions by 26% by 2025. China's president, Xi, agreed to limits its emissions by 2030, also to start using cleaner types of energy. Some U.S. lawmakers are not welcoming the agreement because the U.S. has to do more than China. On the other hand many climate scientists believe the agreement is satisfying, but not completely because it is not enough to avoid the drastic weather changes.

Analysis:
I believe this agreement is the start of something better. Hopefully by U.S. and China taking these actions other countries will see that they can do it to. This agreement is something that needed to be done, because if it continues the problems will be even greater and might even become unfix-able. In my opinion this is a good thing, but it isn't good enough. Just from the U.S and China cutting back on somethings doesn't mean other countries will, so then if that happens the problem is still occurring just less.

Questions:
1) Do you think the difference in the goals for China and the U.S. are unfair?
2) Do you think this will solve the greenhouse gas emission problems?
3) Is this agreement a good thing?

  1. I believe this agreement is good and when the US and China do this it will show the other countries what is possible and will help inspire these countries to do the same thing.
