Compare & Contrast: Judaism, Christianity & Islam
In a well developed paragraph, using evidence from Primary Sources in Judaism, Christianity & Islam, identify similarities and or differences between the religions. Post your paragraph as a comment to this blog post
Morality is very similar in the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faith. Morality is similar in the Jewish and Christian faith because they both follow the ten commandments. These 10 commandments set down rules for all the followers of these religions. The 10 commandments are a bit similar to the 5 pillars of the muslim faith. The 5 pillars also set down rules about what people should do so they can live a good life and honor their god. All these examples show how the people of each religion should live.
ReplyDeleteBoth Judaism, Islam, and Christianity show similarities in morality, prayer, and God’s role in people’s lives. More specifically, Judaism and Christianity have similar faiths about God’s role. God’s role is similar in Judaism and Christianity because they both show how to recognize one and only God. For example in the Torah, Jews believe that, “You shall not recognize the gods of others in My presence.” This shows recognition to only one God, just like Christians in the Bible. “We believe in one God.” From the Nicene Creed in the Bible, which is also something Christians follow. This is similar to Judaism because both clearly state believing in one God. Even though they are two different religions, there are similarities in what both religions believe in.
ReplyDeleteMorality is similar about Judaism, Christianity, and Islam’s views because they all teach people the difference between what is right and wrong. Islam is different from Christianity and Judaism because it tells us what we should do instead of what not to do. Morality is similar in Judaism as it is to Islam’s because they both say you should do good in the world but they are also different by the Jews go by the Ten Commandments which is a list of things not to do and Muslims go by the five pillars which is a five things you should do.The holy book for Jewish people, the Torah states,”You shall not murder”(20 Torah). The holy book for Muslim people, the Quran says,”The charity you give shall go to the parents, the relatives…”(97-98 Quran). Also Christians go by the Ten Commandments which tells us what not to do, just like the Jews. All three religions morality is correct and teaches people to be the best person they can be even if it is expressed differently in each religion.
ReplyDeleteGod’s role is similar in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam because all three of their Gods are considered the creators of earth “and all things visible and invisible.” (Excerpt from the Creed) In each of the cultures, their God is the supreme ruler, and they all recognize the importance of the role he plays.
ReplyDeleteGods Role is similar in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam because they base whatever they do to revolve around the expectations of their God. For example, the Jewish state in the 10 commandments, “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.” (Line 17) Also, the Christians repeatedly state, “I believe in one God,” or “One Lord Jesus Christ”. Both of these examples of Judaism and Christianity imply that their followers revolve around the role of their God. In the Islamic culture, the first pillar says, “...and unto Him we have surrendered.” (Line 77) This shows how the role of Allah plays a part in their lives because they basically have given, or “surrendered” their lives to Him. This is similar to the Christians and Jews, because they too greatly honor the role of their God and try their best to follow his ways.
The three religions highly insist on the fact that there can only be one god, and that you have to achieve his goals that were passed down from the holy prophet. God’s role is similar between all three religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, because he is the only god and the supreme of all. For example, people of each religion believe that there is only “one god in the whole entire universe”, according to line nine of ” Excerpts from Torah” and line 70 from “Quran Excerpts on 5 pillars”. This is similar to Christianity, since it only believes in Jesus, but different since Christianity tells about how their god is the creator of all things seen and unseen according to the Nicene Creed. In Christianity, god is told to come back again to judge the living and dead, which is different from Islam since Allah acts as a god that does not want you to suffer as long as you will worship him by following the five pillars.
ReplyDeleteJudaism, Christianity, and Islam religions are different because of required religious duties (morality), how often and how to pray and worship (prayer/worship), and how people build relationships with their God (God’s role in our lives). Morality is similar in Judaism and Christianity because in each religion, followers are required and reminded to worship God on the sabbath day, based on what the Torah and the Bible claims. Followers are to believe in one God and acknowledge His commandments. Morality is different among Christianity and Islam because of the required times of prayer, according to the Quran and the Holy Bible. Islam also requires followers to take on a pilgrimage at one point in their lifetime, but Christianity does not. According to the Torah of Judaism, the Bible of Christianity, and the Quran of Islam, each religion similarly devotes time for worship daily. This proves that each of these three religions are similar in small ways, but are different because of their beliefs and practices.
ReplyDeleteJudaism, Christianity, and Islam are all religiously similar because they all are monotheistic.
ReplyDeleteGod’s role in religion is similar between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam because they all worship one God. In the passage from the Torah, the holy book of Jews, it says, “Listen Israel, YHVH is our God, YHVH is One” (7). This explains outright that Judaism is monotheistic, where they believe in one God. Christianity also believes in one God because at the beginning of the Nicene Creed, it states, “We believe in one God” (35). This, again, states outright that they are monotheistic, just like Judaism. Finally, the Quran, the holy book of Muslims, states, “Allah bears witness that there is no God but Him” (70). This proves that all three religions are monotheistic, therefore God’s role in religion is similar between all of them.
Morality is different in Judaism and Islam, because each asks of different things. In Judaism all that is asked is basic duties. “You shall not commit murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal…” (Judaism Commandments 20-22). These duties are ones expected in almost every civilization, and these are the basic requirements as far as morality in Judaism. It would be thought that you need to go above and beyond when you are a member of a religion, this proves that just being civil is enough. In Islam, they ask you to surpass the the standard duties and challenge you to be a better person and make a difference. “You shall give the due alms to the relatives, the needy, the poor, and the traveling alien…” (Islam Pillars 90). This quote shows how charity is a necessity in the Islam religion, and in order to be a person of morality you must do more than just fulfill the requirements of society. This proves that Islam requires a higher grade of morality for their followers than Judaism.
ReplyDeleteIn Christianity, Islam, and Judaism people people are expected to believe in their God and their God only.
ReplyDeleteGod’s role is similar in all 3 religions because in every religion there is only 1 God. For example, in Judaism the 10 commandments state “1: I am the Lord your God. 2: You shall not recognize the Gods of others in my presence.” The Christian Nicene Creed says “We believe in one God.” The first pillar of Islam states “Allah bears witness that there is no God but him.” This proves that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all monotheistic religions.
Judaism,Christianity, and Islam view God’s role differently because they have different stories of how their God came to be.
ReplyDeleteGod’s role in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam is different because there are different ways how God was made. In the Nicene Creed is states “On the second day, Jesus came from heaven and became human. Then on the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father”. This shows that the God in Christianity was killed and resurrected into heaven. In the Quran it states that Allah is their one and only God and he is always alive and watching Muslims. This is different from Christianity because Allah never died or was resurrected and this is different from Judaism because Allah was never founded. In the Torah it states that Abraham founded God and that God never died and is always alive and watching Jews. This is different from Christianity because God never died or was resurrected and it is different from Islam because the God of Judaism was founded by someone. All in all each religion is diverse in its own way and has a different story of how God was made.
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are much alike because they all have certain guidelines to follow. In both religions if you don’t follow the guidelines then you will face a punishment by god. One reason why they are similar is in Judaism, “You shall not murder, commit adultery, or steal”(lines 19-23). To be a Muslim, “You must refrain from sexual intercourse, misconduct, and arguments through Hajj (lines 115-116). In both of these religions there are a set of rules that you need to follow, and if you don’t people believe that god will not watch over you. Overall Judaism and Islam are morality alike because they both have rules to follow.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, all three are very similar in their means of worship. The only difference is how frequent prayer is, how much god means to them, who is god in general, and so on Jews worship in monuments called synagogues and their leader is a rabbi, or “my teacher” in hebrew. They follow a book called a Torah. “You shall not commit adultery” (21). Their main holidays are passover and Yom Kippur. Christianity is the most dominant religion in the world. Christians worship in a church and their main holidays are Christmas and Easter. The follow a priest who leads the prayer. They follow a book called the Bible. “We believe in one god, the father, the almighty” (35,36). Islam is the 2nd most dominant religion in the world with about 1.5 billion people following Islam. Their prayers are led by an imam. they pray in a masjid, and their main holidays are Ramadan and Eid. Muslims follow the book called the Qur'an. They also follow 5 main rules that god has given them. “And proclaim that the people shall observe Hajj pilgrimage” (112).
ReplyDeleteMorality is similar and different in each religion. All religions want all to not do any common illegal acts such as murdering, stealing, or hurting others in any way. Most religions want followers to only believe in one God, and treat that God as special and that there is no other God like Him. But some religions have others rules and laws other than the ones stated, some are harsh, and some are nice. In the Quran, the holy book of the Muslims, it says that Islamic followers encourage followers to give to others who are in great need, poor, family members, or friends. Islam is the only religion to do this. But also the Quran says that Muslims should not give too much, or foolishly give away to others until you feel blamed and sorry when you cannot give any more. Christians expect all followers to have faith and respect to God and others, they don’t encourage charity as much as Islam does, but Christians still want respect. In the Nicene Creed, a passage from the Bible, the holy book of the Christian religion, it says mostly to believe in one God, and to baptise for the forgiveness of sins. In Judaism they have very strict laws to follow, and harsh punishments. For example, one thing is that if you drop the Torah, the holy book of the Jewish religion, you will be punished by having to fast for forty days, which would most certainly conclude to death by starvation. Other than that the Torah only has basic laws, except for a few. One others that stands out is that to not blame your neighbours, or not take your “fellow’s” possessions.
ReplyDeleteGod’s role in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam has differences between them. There are a few differences about God’s role in the religions.
ReplyDeleteChristianity is different in God’s role from Judaism and Islam. In Judaism, they say, “YHVH is their God, YHVH is the one”(7). In Islam, they say, “Allah bears witness that there is no God but Him (la-ilaha-illa-hu)”(70). Although, in Christianity, God is proclaimed in this way; “We believe in ino God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.”(35-38). Christianity is different from Judaism and Islam in God’s role because the Christians refer to God as the only true God, the true Father. In Islam and Judaism, they refer to God as, “not God but Allah”, and “YHVH is the God, he is the one”. Although, all three of these religions believe in monotheism; which is the belief in one God. Their differences in God’s role are that they each have a different interpretation of what their “God” is. They all believe in a higher one, being their “God”, and they all believe in the requirements of fasting, worship and prayer, and giving to their higher “God”.
Morality is similar in all 3 religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam because they all have sacred texts that say what these people, that are apart of that religion, can or can not do (what is right and what is wrong).
ReplyDeleteIn the ten commandments of Judaism, it says “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not take the Name of the Lord your God in vain, it all has to do with the right and wrong things in this world that you’re allowed to do. You can’t kill others, you can’t steal, don’t just randomly same God when your mad, those are some wrong things to do. Also like in Christianity the Nicene Creed says “We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ” that means that it is wrong to believe in more than 1 god, to believe in a god other than Jesus Christ. Like Islam’s the 5 Pillars in "The Quran", every pillar tells how one must say things when praying or to not except so many things from charity or to give so much away, things that you as an Islam can not do.
God’s role is similar in Judaism and Christianity because they believe that God is the Supreme Being and that He created the world and life. For example, Jews believe that, “God is the Supreme Being” according to line 9 in the passage, “Judaism: Excerpts from Torah.” This shows that they believe that God is the perfect being. This is similar to Christianity because they believe the same thing. For example, Christians believe that God is, “The Father, The Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth,” according to line 36-37 in the passage, “Christianity: Nicene Creed.” This shows that God is once again, the ultimate being.
ReplyDeletePrayer and worship is similar in the three religions because they all believe in one God and to be a good person. An excerpt from the Ten Commandments in the Torah, the religious text of the Jewish religion, says that “I am the Lord God”, meaning that He is the one and only God. The Nicene Creed in the Bible, the religious text of the Christian religion, states that “We believe in one God”, The similar to the Torah. In the Quran, the religious text of the Islamic religion, the First Pillar states that “There is no God but Him”. This is something that is reoccuring in each holy book, the fact that they believe in one God.
ReplyDeleteJudaism, Christianity, and Islam all have different views on God’s role in the world. Judaism follows the ten commandments, and they also believe that God is the God of gods and the Master of masters, which means that he is the supreme. Also, “God plays a role as the Lord their God in Judaism ” (Line 15). Christianity is similar to Judaism with God’s role in the world, like how he is the ”Eternally begotten of the Father” (Line 41). “For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate and also suffered death then was buried” (Lines 51 and 52). Islam has the most unique view of God’s role, out of the three religions. In the Quran, god wants his people to “Eat from their fruits, and give the due alms on the day of the harvest” [6:141]. This is how all three religions have different views on God’s role in the world.
ReplyDeletePrayer and worship are very important in Islamic or Jewish practises, but are more lenient when it comes to a religion like Christianity.
ReplyDeleteWorship, in a most religions, is the praise of a God-like figure. Christians, Jews, and Muslims all believe in monotheism, the belief in one God. Christians have a Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who is the one and only son of God. Jews believe in YHVH who they believe wrote the Torah, their Holy Book. Muslims believe in Allah, who created everything for a reason. Each one of the three previously mentioned religions have a different God, Christians are the only ones who believe in Jesus Christ. When Christians pray they can either pray to the son of God or God himself and there is no specific time or place to pray. Christians have an excerpt from the Bible that explains all God or Jesus needs from one person, is to believe in them. Jewish followers pray to YHVH. In the Torah it states, “YHVH is our God, YHVH is One”(Deuteronomy 6:4). This basically means that it would be disrespectful to pray to any other God. Muslims have practically a step by step explanation on how to pray known as the 5 Pillars. The second Pillar in particular instructs, “[...]turn thy face towards the inviolable place of worship”(2:149). Not only does the Torah explain when to worship, it explain where to face while you worship.
Gods role is similar in Judaism and Islamic because in both of these religions they have one God that they worship. They both believe that "God is one". For example Muslims believe that "Allah bears/ witnesses that there is no God but him"(3:18). This shows that just like Jews, Muslims also believe there is one God. Jews believe that "YHVH is our God YHVH is one" (Deuteronomy, 10:17). These two religions are different from Christianity because in Christians believe in "One Lord,Jesus Christ" and "One God" (Nicene Creed).
