Why might some women choose to wear the hijab and others choose not to? To what extent do people treat others based on what they wear or how they look? Should people have to consider what others will think of them when deciding what to wear?
I think some women choose to wear a hijab and some don't because of how they interpret the Quran. Some women may think that it doesn't really matter how modest you are and some may think that modesty is a thing that should always be considered outside of the house. In the first article, she talks about how the hijab is something that helps express who she is and she says it makes her feel more free, not necissarily from a clothing standpoint, but from the standpoint that she feels more free without random men making catcalls at her. In the second article, the woman believes that the hijab doesn't free her, if anything it makes her less free because she began to wear the hijab around the time of 9/11, when everybody was racist towards Muslims so she got a lot of hate from people for expressing her religion.
ReplyDeleteSome women would want to wear a hijjab because it shows how close they are to their religion, and that they will feel closer to Islam. People can take wearing a hijjab very far because, since 9/11 people always question women that wear it and ask if they're terrorists and start making stereotypes so its not fair to the women. No they shouldn't. No matter who wears what, someone will be out there judging you and everyone has to learn to look past those people.
ReplyDeleteSome women might not want to wear the hijab, because others will judge them In “Why I stopped wearing the hijab,” Sara Yasin said that people shunned her after the 911 terror attacks, so she stopped wearing the hijab. She later said that it forced her to defend feminism and explain that she was not forced to wear the hijab. This means that the hijab can be a prison, even if no one forces you to wear it. People are judged heavily judged by what they wear. In “The hijab is an expression of my feminism,” Mira said that people often assumed she did not speak English. This means that people judge others about everything based of what they happen to be wearing that day. People should not have to consider what others will think. Mira said that what she wore was a symbol of feminism and that she didn’t care what other people thought.
ReplyDeleteThere are several reasons why a women would and would not choose to wear a hijab.
ReplyDeleteWomen might wear it, because maybe their husbands would prefer them to wear a hijab, or they believe that hijabs will stop men from having ‘lustful’ thoughts, also maybe the woman feels better about herself. Like on lines 85 and 86, where Mira says that it’s a relief that she is free to from having to dress, or diet, for men’s attention. However there are other reasons why a woman would choose not to wear a hijab. For example, the amount of judgemental stares must be very uncomfortable. Sara Yasin explains that she felt pressure to prove things about her religion/herself so that she could break the stereotypes Americans have (128-130). There is a very large extent on how people treat other people based on how they look. Like a person can wear clothes that make them look nice, and a person can automatically think that the person is rich. Or if a person is wearing something that is not so modest a person can think “Oh that person is so hot.” Without even getting to know them, because maybe that person is a very mean person but since people only base things on the way they look they wouldn’t bother trying to see how that person is on the inside. Personally, I think that a person shouldn’t worry too much about how they dress. However they should dress respectfully, and not worry about what other people think.
Some women feel like they are expressing themselves and their faith. Mira, from The hijab is an expression of my feminism”, she stated, “For me it’s a symbol of my freedom and expression. The veil gives me a way to say that I follow Islam.” Some. women also think that it is bad to wear in public when a tragic event happens with Muslims involved, everyone that is that religion or looks like they are Muslim. Sara Yasin, from WWhy might some women choose to wear the hijab and others choose not to? To what extent do people treat others based on what they wear or how they look? Should people have to consider what others will think of them when deciding what to wear?hy I stopped wearing hijab, said that, “[Muslims] did not clash with stars and stripes.” She was saying that most people in America judge others by how they look and their reputation. Americans, and some other people in other countries, judge each other by their looks and what they wear so much that even police officers halt Muslims more often than someone who looks suspicious. Personally, I think people shouldn’t care what others think about them because it will end up restricting them from being themselves.
ReplyDeleteSome Muslim women may choose to not wear a hijab because they don't have strong believes as Mira says "to only wear the veal and not act modestly in your behavior makes it pointless- it just becomes a piece of cloth"(38). This means that woman choose t wear the veal because they are showing what they believe in to the world and if you wear this and don't believe in what your showing, it is meaning less. Its more of a fashion statement then worshiping your God. Other people also may judge Arab women when wearing the hijab and assume things about them "My religion didn't clash with the stars and stripes"(125). Sara Yasin explains this quote because when 9/11 happened it was hard for her to walk around wearing the hijab when people think she is a terrorist. People shouldn't have to consider what others think of them when deciding what to wear but no matter what you wear someone will judge you. People get judged everyday for what they wear even when its for religion "the hijab comes with its own brand of judgement"(136). People know the risk of wearing certain things but it shows how strong they are when they wear it knowing these risks.
ReplyDeleteSome women might have different opinions on wearing a hijab, or not to wear a hijab. Some say wearing a hijab only reflects their religion and beliefs, while others argue how a hijab restricts women and their choices in life. "I feel more liberated as a result of wearing the veil." This is something said by Mira on lines 50-52. She explains how before converting Islam, she felt less liberated when wearing more revealing clothing. She also talks about how the hijab is only a piece of clothing, if you don't relate to the morals behind the hijab. I think people can judge others by stereotypes or physical appearance. Sara Yasin also talked about her experience wearing a hijab, but her story is very different. She has decided to take of the veil because it makes her feel less liberated and judged. "...Hijabs marked me as a source of answers about what many saw as the ideology responsible for the national tragedy. (9/11)" (line122) This shows how national tragedies, like 9/11, could but a stereotype on people who wear a hijab. I think women should only wear whatever they are comfortable wearing, hijab or not, and others shouldn't influence that choice.
ReplyDeleteI think wearing a hijab or not is a personal choice every Muslim women. In the article The hijab is an expression of my feminism, it says, “I want people to know that, from seeing me visually, as my faith means so much to me”(51-52). This Muslim teen wants to wear a Hijab because she feels it expresses her religion and almost makes her feel more connected to her community of Muslims. In the article Why I stopped wearing Hijab it states,”I saw every question as an opportunity to break the stereotype…”(129-130). In this age every man and woman thinks about their style and what they are going to look like today. Did they try or are they being lazy and wearing yoga pants and a sweatshirt? This author has the same feelings as we do. People who are not with the current style are considered different and other judge them because different is scary and not “the norm”. I believe in this perfect world you have to think about what you wear, what people are going to think, and how they react because this is the new age of style and development. If people who are wearing hijab’s are considered not in style than thats an opinion of others who don’t know what a hilab represents.
ReplyDeletePeople where the hijab for many reasons. Some wear it as a religious symbol to show their devotion, others wear it to not show of their body. The hijab can also show that you are confident in what they believe in and others can not change that. Often people don’t wear the hijab because people judge them or they don’t feel it will help their spiritual journey. The way people are judged for wearing the hijab is wrong because people should be treated as equal. In the text of “The Hijab is an Expression of My Feminism” it states “Have you been treated badly as a result of wearing the a veil in public? Yes… people often do stare; sometimes in a nice way, but also in a negative way.” A person should not be judged negative way for wearing to hijab because it is their choice. “Some would say wearing the veils is about making women take responsibility for men’s ‘lust problems? Thats not why I wear the veil.” I really think this is the wrong way to look at it because I think it should be shown as the woman has chosen that she wants to take her religious experience to the next level.
ReplyDeleteI think certain girls choose to wear to Hijab because they feel they have more freedom. Some might not wear it because they don’t believe it really symbolizes anything or they feel more freedom when they wear their own things. Some people treat others in both negative and positive ways. Negative because they might judge others based on their clothing and have an idea of their personality which might not even be true. Some people treat others in a positive way because they like what others are wearing or they respect others’ religion. I don't think people should be nervous and have to have stress hang over them just because of their appearance because it’s your body and your life and you should be proud of it.
ReplyDeleteI think it’s personal choice. I think people who wear the hijab are for people who want a more detailed conversations rather than having to talk to someone just to flirt. People who don’t care about the hijab are probably those who don’t care what others think of them or don’t know what the hijab means to others. Judging people on how they look is stupid, some people should just be themselves and not care that they aren’t wearing the social norm. Sometimes people go an extremist route. Directly after 9/11 muslims or people who wear the hijab were treated much differently. Most Muslims had to stay inside their houses to stay away from the hatred of others. If you are a muslim and 9/11 or something really horrible happened using your religion as a flag, you should probably change how you dress. But if it’s just a normal day then you should wear whatever you want, who cares what others think.
ReplyDeleteI think that some women might choose to wear the hijab and some might not because it can depend on how spiritually connected they are to the culture, like Muslims that are very connected they wear all of the right clothes cover all the places they need to because of the rules they have. People treat others based on what they wear or how they look because either they could look bad or look good to see who's hot or not, stuff like that makes us judge others for what they are wearing. People should consider what others will think of them when deciding what to wear because they are afraid of what others will think of them, like if you were trying to impress someone you wouldn't want to look bad, you would try to look in a nice and presentable way.
ReplyDeleteSome people might choose to wear the hijab because of their religion, of their beliefs. Mira believes that the veil is the Islamic call to modesty. The term “hijab”is often used to describe the veil that they wear. Some people choose not to wear the hijab because they feel pressure to prove that they are not oppressed- whether that was in their personality, relationships, or their answers to even the most benign questions about Islam. Some people look down on people who wear the hijab. Some people assumed that MIra did not know how to speak English because she was wearing a hijab so when Mira opens her mouth and is articulate, the people who assumed MIra couldn’t speak English was surprised. People should not consider what others think of them because people should get to decide what they want to wear, or what they don’t want to wear.
ReplyDeleteI think some women chose to not wear a hajab in order to prevent people from judging them for something that they are not. Wearing a hajab paints a oppressed, blind worshiping women to people who believe in stereotypes. This could cause people to misjudge peoples' morals and beliefs because they wear the stereo typical hijab. I believe that some woman just don't want to be misjudged, so they do not wear their hijab. I think people judge people a lot based on clothing because a person's first interaction is visual. Previous experiences cause people to judge people based on people they have met before that look simular. I actually do think that people should think about others thoughts when deciding what to wear, because if they don't people might expect them to act in a certain way or believe in certain things. What you wear in a way mirrors you as a person; It mirrors you beliefs and personality.
ReplyDeleteFor women, wearing the Hijab is based on how you feel about it, and the way it makes you feel. For many women, the HIjab makes them feel restricted, they feel it sets them apart as women and Muslims, and makes them the target of harassment. Other women feel empowered by the Hijab, they believe that it gives them an escape from pressure. I think that people should not have to think of what they’re wearing before they put it on because they should have the choice of what they wear without influence. They should know that people will judge them based on what they wear.
ReplyDeleteI believe some women choose to wear the hijab because in the interview between Vicky and Mira, Mira explains, “It’s more respectful to other humans to treat them with spiritual respect, rather than flirting as a way of life.” This explains how she thinks that wearing the hijab doesn’t allow men to look at women and judge them based on their appearance, but based on their spirituality of personality. On the other hand, Sara Yasin explains, “hijab came with its own brand of judgment.” In here she talked about that the hijab allowed others to judge you just based on your culture/religion because of anything that occurred because of a Muslim. People can start judging Muslims at any point in any way. For example, Mira explains, “when people see my hijab they often assume I can’t speak English!” She talks about how people stare at her in both positive and negative ways, and they will often assume things that aren’t true. On a negative point, Mira explains how people judge her and her religion because of news about terrorists and 9/11. Sara relates because once 9/11 occurred, she was stared at and judged because of it, when before she was usually invisible in High School. People shouldn’t have to consider what to wear because if they want to wear a hijab because they feel that’s their personality and something they want to do, then they should. If others feel that the hijab restricts them and doesn’t define who they are, then they shouldn’t, because no one is suppose to tell you how to dress, and they shouldn’t have to listen to those people.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, women can choose whether they want to wear the Hijab or not, but it is a matter of how religious and dedicated to their religion they are. However, I believe that you could still be extremely religious and not wear the Hijab as you would when you would wear it. People have different opinions on how they choose to live their lives, and basing what they wear off how religious they are isn't always the right way to judge. It gives them a sense of freedom, yet when they do choose to wear it, it actually restricts them a lot. However, they may not feel restricted. In our society today, people judge others by how they look all the time. It is actually probably the main reason we judge people, other than personality. For example, when I am with my friends and i see someone good looking, I will say or think something along the lines of "wow, he's hot." The Muslim women who choose to wear Hijabs probably do not judge others based on looks as much as women of Western Culture do so. By choosing to wear the Hijab and the long clothing that covers their bodies, they basically force men to judge them based on personality. The only thing they could judge the women on is literally JUST their face, not the rest of the body. This is probably the case in Muslim culture for the most part, but in western culture it is different. When choosing what to wear, many girls in western culture may choose clothing that makes them more appealing, and clothing that makes their bodies look good. While many Muslim women may not want to be subjected to physical judgement, tons of women from other cultures actually WANT to be judged by their looks. For example, women (and men), want people to compliment them on their looks or admire their good looks. Overall, when choosing what to wear, girls choose based on what they feel is best for them, and we should not judge them based on that.
ReplyDeleteSome women may choose to wear the hijab, and some may not. Some may cover themselves more than others. I believe that what one chooses to wear is a personal decision. If a Muslim woman personally believes that it is necessary for her to wear the hijab, then she should do so. Modesty is practiced and she can express her faith that way. If a Muslim woman personally believes that it is not necessary for her to wear a hijab, then she should follow through with that. Practicing modesty can be expressed through physical appearance and spiritual appearance. These decisions are based on one's religious beliefs and personal perceptions. Judgments based on physical appearance are much more popular in this day and age than in the past. People associate others with what they wear and how they portray themselves. Because of this, people are quick to judge religions, groups of people, and stereotypes. Moving forward, I believe people shouldn't have to worry or be concerned about others' judgments prior to deciding what to wear or what to look like. Although, I think it's something that almost all people do. I know that I consider others' opinions before making my mind up about physical appearance. Overall, I believe that people should be confident in their appearances.
ReplyDeleteWearing the hijab is a personal choice.I believe some women choose to wear the hijab because they feel like it will make them more connected to God. On the other hand I think Muslims choice not to wear the hijab because they feel restricted and they feel like it makes them a target. Nowadays people treat others differently based on what they wear and how they look. If a person is wearing all black people assume they are gothic. If you see someone dress in all black odds are you will choose to stay away from them, stereotyping them. The hijabs help mark who are Muslims and because of stereotyping, people jump to the conclusions that they are terrorists. People sometimes jump to this conclusion because Muslims brought down the Twin Towers. “After the Twin Towers fell, soon my religion was no longer just a part of an internal struggle, it was now the subject of a public debate”( lines 118-119). I don’t believe that it is right that people have to think what others will think about them when deciding to wear something. Even though I do this every morning when getting ready to school, I wear what I want to wear. The thought that we have to think about this is very saddening. “I get looked up and down in a really judgmental way”(lines 90-91). This relates to people having to think about what others will think about their outfit because nowadays in society people are quick to judge.
ReplyDeleteI believe that wearing a hijab is a personal choice. Some women wear it because they feel the need to embrace their religion and be close to God and others wear it because they don't want to be looked at sexually. Some women choose not to wear the hijab because it will make them a target to other people or it will make them stand out in a group of people. Today most people judge or stereotype people by their type of clothing. If someone is wearing a creepy looking t-shirt people are going to think that person looks creepy. The same thing goes with hijabs. People think that people who wear hijabs are terrorists.
ReplyDeleteWomen wear hijabs for many different reasons. First of all they can wear it in order to show what religion they are, they feel proud to wear a symbol of their religion. They can also wear it as they were originally used for, to keep modest.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what you do, there is always going to be someone who thinks negatively against someone wearing who is wearing something differently. Racism is a large problem in today’s society because one religion or ethnic group will always feel better than the rest, it’s simply human instinct.
Popular cheerleaders tend to wear a certain type of clothing while almost everyone else wears something different. I believe it’s subconscious. When someone goes out to buy an outfit, they don’t realize that they look for something that is similar to what their friends are wearing because they are trying to fit in. It’s not that they look good in it, it’s that everyone else will think they look good in it.
