Revamped parking meters collect change for homeless

Summary: In Pasadena, Los Angeles there is a new program for helping homeless people. They created a plan that was thought to reduce panhandling. They turned parking meters into places to collect change for the homeless. People created this, because the biggest question people have when giving money: "Is my money going to help their hunger or an addiction?" It is said that the meters have helped a lot and hopefully raising awareness. In just a little over 3 weeks only 2 meters raised $270. However there are people saying that it is a bad idea. “It’s a nice idea,” Johnson said. “But we won’t get that money.” Also, other homeless people who need things other then food. For example, a place to sleep, or health care. Other people are saying that nonprofit organizations don't always help. Like, granola bars are pointless for people without healthy teeth, as is canned food without a can opener. Other homeless people like the idea, “I hope they put a lot of them around. Put a meter on every street. I do hope it works,” Ruiz said. All in all they are experimenting different things to help homeless people and reduce panhandling.

Analysis: I think that this is a really good idea. I feel like this will end up helping a lot of homeless  people. Even though there are negatives to this idea, maybe if enough money is donated then they could work on helping homeless with other things other than hunger. I also believe that this does prevent panhandling. This prevents panhandling because, the organizations get to choose what the money is spent on and it also helps them with drug addictions.

Questions:

1. Do you think this is a good idea?

2. Would you donate money directly to a person or donate money to the meter?

3. If you were in a situation as a homeless person do you think that you would like the meters, or not?

  1. This is a good idea it gets people who are already giving away their money to give it to a good cause. Some homeless people will use the money to buy drugs, but there are plenty of homeless people who need money and will use it to better their lives. It will help out enough people to make it worth while. No bad can come from giving money to people who use it well. The up sides outweigh to down sides. This is a good idea.

  2. I think it is a great idea, if I were to donate I would probably just give it to directly to the person, if I were homeless I would love the meter because then I would get more money.

  3. I think making money for homeless people is a great idea through meters because it raises a lot of money in a fast fashion. I would donate money to the meter because the money would be used for a good cause like food or shelter and if I just gave it to the person they might not make the smartest decisions with it. I don't know, probably not

  4. I think it a great Idea! but if the homeless people don't actually get the money then I think that it would all be for nothing! So if it ends up actually helping the homeless then that's amazing!

  5. I think that it is a great idea to help the poor people. It is a good idea because if 2 meters can make $270, 10 meters would make a lot of money to give to the poor people. I also think that these meters should be installed not only in Pasadena but the whole world to make the world a better place to live for the poor people. If i was in the situation as a homeless person, I would love to have the meters.

  6. yes i think it is a good idea, however there could be a chance people are stealing the money that aren't even homeless. so, i would donate money directly because i know where my money is really going to and that it isn't going to someplace for the government to steal. if i were homeless i would like the idea because then i may be able to buy food.

  7. I think this is a great idea because the meters would go to people who actually need the money for food rather than to addicts. It lets people donate with confidence that their money will be used for good while still helping the poor get money. Hopefully the parking meter plan works out and expands so one day poverty might end.

  8. This is a great invention that needs to be taken advantage of by the homeless population, because in encourages people to help the homeless. Instead of handing money to the homeless a more effective way to give money is to give it to the homeless.
