The following YouTube video was made by BuzzfeedYellow about how different cities in America and in other countries got its nickname. After watching this interesting video, I learned a lot more about cities and theirs nicknames. Some nicknames are creative and have a really long history to it (Chicago), while some are just really straightforward (Boston). Although most of the cities that BuzzfeedYellow talked about were in America, I feel as if they needed to add some more cites, such as cities that most people don't know about in America. I think that this is a reliable source since Buzzfeed is a company that has been pretty successful with its website throughout the years and it even offers some weekly educational videos for its viewers and subscribers to watch on YouTube.
Here are some examples of cities' nicknames and how they got them:
- Chicago (Windy City)- Several cities are windier than Chicago, such as New York and Kansas City. It started out in 1876 when a Cincinnati paper called Chicago politicians "full of wind", which started out as a rant.
- Boston (Beantown)- Boston was known for its cooked beans in Molasses, even though the Boston cream pie is much more popular. But since the name "Cream Pie town" didn't havea ring to it, they name it Beantown instead.
- Singapore (Lion City)- The word Singapura translates to "Lion City", and legend has it that the city's founder saw a lion and named the city after it.
For my next blog post, I want to research about whether people around the world prefer to live in cities by the sea or by the mountains.
