Is Geography Destiny? Ebola Article

Is Geography Destiny?
Ebola Article

I think that geography is not necessarily destiny. I dont agree with the fact that geography is destiny because of the themes of geography which are region and movement.

First of all, geography doesn’t necessarily mean destiny to people because of the region. In the article, The U.S. Urges Africa to Step up Ebola Prevention; By: Joseph Muraya, it mentions the regions in which are affected by Ebola and its spread. The regions would consist of North America (The Southeast, or Atlanta) and West Africa. Many things happened because of Ebola and its affect on these regions. A few of some things that resulted from Ebola consist of the people in these regions. They either had to be isolated if they had been affected by Ebola, or they had to temporarily move away from the areas with severe effects from Ebola. This shows that geography is not destiny because of all the things going on in the regions. The people there might have started in these regions, whether they were at an advantage or not, and they could adapt to the region.

Second, geography doesn’t necessarily mean destiny to people because of the movement. In the article, The U.S. Urges Africa to Step up Ebola Prevention; By: Joseph Muraya, it mentions the movement that occurred during the time of Ebola. Ebola affected the people in the regions previously mentioned and causes many ways of movements. People came to and from the U.S. as well as West Africa. In the U.S., people were getting prepared to go to West Africa and aid the region there, which was affected by Ebola. Also, people came from West Africa to get treated in the U.S. In West Africa, people from helping countries aided the places severely affected by Ebola. Also, people came in and out to help with Ebola and to move away and get treated from Ebola. This shows that geography is not destiny because of all the movement that has occurred in a result from Ebola. The people moved both to and from West Africa and the U.S. to do what is necessary for the people.

In conclusion, I think that geography is not necessarily destiny because of the regions and movement.

Is geography destiny or could people make their own destiny?

Geography is not destiny because the themes of  Movement and Place show that in Western Africa Ebola is spreading in so many countries that weren't expecting this disease. People could change their own destiny.
http://media.cmgdigital.com

According to the article  “ Obama - International Response Needed for Ebola Outbreak.” president Barack Obama says “If we don't make that effort now, and this spreads not just through Africa but other parts of the world, there's the prospect then that the virus mutates, it becomes more easily transmittable” This means that if together, the world doesn't make an effort to stop Ebola, it will spread around the world which will kill many people.  This comes under one part of geography which is Movement because this disease is moving/spreading in different parts of Western Africa. Therefore this article proves that geography is not destiny because the people who live in west Africa, did not know that Ebola is going to strike their regions.

According to this article “Coca-Cola Battles Ebola - Invests Initial U.S.$13,500” which shows that the coca-cola bottle company in Liberia is helping to stop Ebola to go to other countries by giving them medical assistance, Water etc. They care about their environment and where they live thats why they want to keep their environment clean and disease free. Liberia was a good place to live before the spread of Ebola. “ the Liberia Coca-Cola Bottling Company (LCCBC)  has made an initial huge contribution” this also shows that the coca cola bottle company has made a huge contribution in stop the spread of Ebola.
In conclusion, these articles show that geography is not destiny because people can change their own destiny.

What To Do With the Ebola Outbreak?

The geographic themes of Movement and Interaction between humans and the environment prove that geography is NOT destiny in Africa because you are able to change your surroundings.

The movement theme of geography shows that geography does not determine your destiny. If your country has been affected by a natural disaster, then other countries can fly goods into your country and help everyone out with food, water, and other necessary goods. In the article, “Liberia welcomes U.S.Military Role in Ebola Fight.” The U.S. has brought goods into Liberia when the Ebola pandemic hit. The article stated that which reinforces the idea that geography does not determine a person’s destiny.

The Interaction Between Humans and the Environment shows that geography does not define someone’s destiny. According to the article, “Take Urgent Action on Ebola.” humans can get the virus from eating animals. One can simply stop eating meat and start eating a vegetarian diet so they can avoid the risk of getting the Ebola virus. There are other ways to get protein, such as eating nuts or tofu. This just proves that geography does not determine one’s destiny.

Ebola

Geographic themes

The geographic themes of Western Africa and America prove that geography is destiny because wherever you live may have different diseases and lethal predators that can be the reason you die one day or wake up the next day.

Human Interactions

The Interactions of human with environment theme of geography shows that. Other countries have to aid Africa to prevent even more spreading of Ebola. According to the article 'World is losing' Ebola fight, health officials say that America bought 200 acres of land to build a Ebola treatment center Therefore, this shows/proves/demonstrates that human have made changes to try and survive Ebola
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/

Regions

The region theme of geography shows that. depending on where someone lives it can have different harmful bacteria and parasites. According to the article Controlling the Ebola Epidemic when Ebola started to become dangerous in Africa other countries struggled and just could not understand Ebola even though it was only found in Africa. Therefore, this proves that depending on the region you live in is were your destiny is decided

Geography and Ebola

The geographic themes of movement and interactions of humans with the environment prove that geography is destiny in West Africa because

The Movement theme of geography shows that geography is destiny. According to USA Today, more than 1,500 people in West Africa have died from Ebola. I think that if the people knew that there would be a disease, they would move somewhere else to live because the authors William Foege, James Mason and David Satcher said that the spread of Ebola not only carries human costs but also great economic costs as well. Therefore, this shows that geography (movement) is Destiny.

The Interaction of Humans with the environment shows that geography is destiny. According to The New York Times, experts are using existing drugs that worked against other diseases. However, experts are scared that a drug might make the patient feel worse. Experts are also worried that the drug might work on the first day and it might also work on the second day, but on the 7th day, the drug might make the patient feel worse. Therefor, this shows that geography (interactions of humans with the environment) is Destiny.

Ebola

Does Where You Live Affect How You Live?

The geographic themes of Movement and Region/Location prove that geography sometimes is destiny because in Western Africa, it is nearly impossible not to catch the Ebola Virus. In Western Africa, the Ebola epidemic is continuing to spread, killing thousands and wiping out entire towns in its path. There are ways that the spread can be slowed, and some people can be protected, however for the Africans right now, geography is destiny.

One of the main reasons in which I believe that geography is destiny is the geographic theme of Movement. Movement, in the Ebola scenario, can be depicted in several different ways. In one article, it states that Ebola is spread through human interaction. For example, when you go to hug someone who may not know they have already contracted Ebola, you would inevitably end up with the disease as well. “Also, Ebola can be moved through contamination of items such as public restrooms, trains, cabs, and other public places where anyone with the disease could have contaminated the surroundings.” (Unknown Title, All African Global Media)

In a place as infected as Western Africa, it is basically inevitable to catch the disease. Plus, “once infected citizens catch Ebola, they are transported to an isolated facility to be cared for. Imagine all the sickness, and to be a doctor or care worker at the facilities would be very risky (The New York Times, “From Bad to Worse With Ebola”). Also, before the law was issued that citizens from Africa could not travel to other areas, many people from the infected parts of Liberia made their way to other parts of Africa and other regions to try and escape the spread of the disease, however the movement of these people only made it worse. “Now other regions of Africa including Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and more are suffering from Ebola as well.”  (The New York Times, “From Bad to Worse With Ebola”)

The second geographic theme that I think proves that geography is destiny is Region/Location. Region and location play a large role in geography being destiny. For example, if there was a place that had some sort of major issue like Ebola, then the people living there may move.

However, in this case, those living in Africa currently are legally not allowed to travel outside the region in case the Ebola spread even further. For the Africans in that situation, geography is destiny. America is a far more technically, medically, and governmentally advanced country than any of those in Africa. In Africa, they do not have as many medicines and cures for diseases and illnesses as we do, therefore the chances of dying from disease and illness are higher than those in America. (“Build Hospitals Capacity”, Africa News Service 2014)

In one article, it briefly explained how the locations affect the people living there. In a very unsanitary, poor area without proper medical care, the people living there are more likely to catch disease and infection. (“Facts and Fantasy About Ebola Virus” Author Unknown) Also, it depends on the climates and physical characteristics of the region as well. This proves that geography is destiny because where you live impacts your life more than you may believe.

No School? May Sound Fun, but is it Really?

http%3A%2F%2Ffind.galegroup.com
I believe that Human interactions with their environment and movement both have a very strong connection with destiny. Geography has a lot to do with destiny.

The article, “Ebola - House to Re-Examine Schools' Resumption Date” states that the Committee of Education was asked to shut down all schools and Jobs until the outbreak is contained due to risk of spreading the disease. The Committee had originally declared to open the schools back up in September, but the outbreak became so much worse that they extended the date to October. Many of the people who now cannot go to work are furious that they now can’t afford health insurance. Whereas the U.S. has enough to help pay for Ebola patients insurance. Another article,“ U.S Hospital to Treat 3rd Ebola Patient” notifies that there are not enough hospitals in West Africa to house and treat all the victims of Ebola. The text reads,“some patients are traveling across the capital in search of a treatment center with open beds.” meaning that people in Western Africa have a very difficult time finding a hospital, but in the U.S. there are many hospitals.

Movement has a key role in destiny. In the article, “United States Will Help Mobilize 100 Additional African Health Workers for the Ebola Outbreak [press release]” it explains that the U.S. is send a lot of supplies to Africa in order to help put an end to the disease. The U.S. has send a hundred doctors and nurses that are specially trained because West Africa doesn’t have many doctors or hospitals. The U.S. has many things that may help, it’s just a matter of what will work and what won’t. In order to defeat the disease, there must be research done on it. That is why in, “U.S Hospital to Treat 3rd Ebola Patient.” they brought a few patients from Africa that carry Ebola to study the illness as best they can and end the outbreak as best they can.

Can where you live affect your life?

The geographic themes of movement and interaction prove that geography is destiny in West Africa. Ebola is not a problem in America because we have good hospitals and have the money to afford good health care. In Western African countries they do not have the money or equipment to treat these patients. Therefore if you have Ebola and live in west Africa geography is your destiny.

The movement theme of geography is an example of how geography  is destiny. Movement is an example because it shows that people with Ebola are being transported to the U.S. or supplies for people who have the disease are being transported to west Africa. Because Western Africa can not afford to treat these patients and they do not have the resources and hospitals. Ebola is spreading and extending to more countries because people who go to those countries may have symptoms of Ebola. This disease started in Western Africa and it is a huge problem there Ms. Writebol had been helping to dress and then decontaminate doctors and nurses as they went in and out of the Ebola unit at the Monrovia hospital when she felt ill. Recognizing the symptoms of weakness and fever as a precaution, she was tested for Ebola. The test came up positive, and she immediately began treatment in Liberia. This shows that she was in Liberia and since she was there it was destiny that she caught Ebola.  Another example is Ms. Writebol , “while dressed in a white hazardous materials suit and being handled by medical personnel wearing the same, she said, she was placed flat on the luggage conveyor belt to be loaded onto a private air ambulance for the flight home.” These reasons show that geography is destiny because these people didn't want this to happen to them but they live there so is was their destiny.

Another theme of geography that shows that geography is destiny is interaction. Interaction shows that geography is destiny because the people who live in west Africa are spreading this disease to people all around the world and the amount of people catching this disease is reaching a limit that is out of the doctors and nurses control. Many patients are being brought to America from Western Africa to be treated since they can not be treated in Africa. The U.S. government is "ramping up significantly" donations for protective gear, said Smith. Many on the ground have said there aren't enough protective suits for health workers, who have become infected in large numbers in this outbreak. Many people who live in Western Africa may want to come to America and live here but they can not afford to come here so they have to stay which shows that their destiny is based off where these people are from.

Is Geography Destiny?

Geography is destiny because the themes Movement and Interaction of Humans with the Environment show that in Western Africa, they need these resources to help them survive this horrible disease. Without these themes, they wouldn't be able to find a way to survive. These themes are a part of destiny because it allows us to have a future which will work as our destiny.

The Movement theme of geography is important when it comes to the destiny of our lives because it has the most reliable resources we need. For example, people, goods, and ideas. These three things can move from the United States to West Africa.

Without Movement, we wouldn't have doctors, medicine, or even ideas on how to treat and cure the patient. We need Movement in order to kill this deadly virus. In order to find ways to cure the virus, we need to be able to move these ideas to other countries, so they can try and figure out other explanations..Movement is your destiny because it helps prove whether or not you find a cure and live or don’t get the resources you need, and die.

The Interaction of Humans and the Environment of geography is also important because in order to find out if the vaccine/cure works, you need to be able to test it with a human. In the article Human trial of experimental Ebola vaccine to start next week by the Associated Press, it talks about how they had three human volunteers come in and be injected by the vaccine and see how they react to the effects.Without humans interacting with ways to cure the virus, we would have no way of fixing the problem and have no cure. The disease would eventually take over the body in time and kill the human. We need to be able to interact with others to be able to share ideas and make the problem fixable.

Movement and Interaction of Humans and the Environment determines your destiny because without them we would have no future nor destiny for that matter. These themes help create a momentum for our destiny ahead. These help us pursue a destiny. They help us maintain future life.

Ebola Planning to be the Future of Africans?

Ebola Planning to be the Future of Africans?

The two themes, movement and interaction of humans with the environment, show that in Western Africa, geography is destiny because they are changing the lives of many people who are in the countries affected by Ebola.

Movement shows how Ebola is spreading throughout different countries. According to article Ebola workers demand more protection; Time running out to contain virus that has killed 1,900, health officials warn., two Americans who were in Liberia caught the Ebola disease and were moved to Atlanta to be treated on. This means that instead of studying or working in Africa like they probably lived for, they were sent back to the U.S. because they caught a deadly disease that they were not planning on catching. The article also talks about how the Ebola is spreading (moving) throughout the countries. Also, Why U.S. rejected Nigeria’s request for ZMapp explains that cargo planes are limited going back and forth from Africa due to disease-catching. That includes any sort of cargo that is needed (food, new uniforms for nurses/doctors, etc.). They are still moving from place to place, still have that risk of catching the disease, but they are limiting it so that it is less likely. To sum up, this proves that getting near the West African area is very difficult because this disease is so easy to catch. Two American doctors caught the disease and are currently in critical condition, and it’s not the best idea for them to be moved to a place that hasn’t caught the disease. Because they were moved from Africa to Atlanta, the U.S. has a higher chance of catching the Ebola disease.

Doctors in Africa are forced to wear full-body suits in order
to keep them from catching the virus.
Picture from http://upload.wikimedia.org
Interactions with humans and the environment shows how humans have to deal with the environment and how they can adapt. According toWhy U.S. Rejected Nigeria's Request for ZMappthe countries affected with Ebola have blocked off airline travels in order to keep the disease from spreading to other countries outside Africa. If a U.S. flight went to Africa, someone caught the disease, flown back, then our country could be suffering like the other countries. Ebola workers demand more protection; Time running out to contain virus that has killed 1,900, health officials warn. talks about how the nurses in Liberia are cutting up old uniforms and using them to cover themselves up. They are trying to prevent themselves from catching the disease, so they can keep operating on the patients. Summing up, this shows that people are doing anything they can in order to prevent the disease from spreading. The people are blocking themselves from the environment from which contains the Ebola virus.

Africa's Killer Disease

The geographic themes of Region and Movement prove that geography is destiny in West African countries because when you live in regions that suffer from poverty, your lifespan may be less than others from different regions, and unless you can get help from other people, your destiny will still be the same in the end.

Region

http://media.npr.org
The Toronto Star states that region does prove that geography is destiny since the Ebola outbreak in West Africa has already killed about more than 1,900 people. If you were a person born in the West African countries, it would be almost impossible to escape the Ebola virus, since it had already spread across your country, and caused many deaths. In the newspaper article, it says that a special assistant of the president said that Ebola isn't just an African disease, it’s a virus that is a treat to all of humanity. This means that the virus can also affect the whole world, not just Africa. But still, region proves that geography is destiny because the virus has not gotten so far to other places besides the West African countries, and people are already starting to prevent the virus from getting to other places.

Movement
According to the African News Service, movement can also prove that geography is destiny because the virus was spread slower and the people were cured faster only when the doctors and assistants had brought medical goods and water to patients in the hospitals and health centers. It was also mentioned that some of the West African countries were informed by countries from different “regions’ that they needed to respond to the Ebola outbreak faster so that less people would die from the killer disease. Later on, more goods were shipped to Africa so that the doctors and nurses there could cure the disease faster than just by isolating the patients.

Our World Would be Lost with Out Our Five Themes of Geography

The geographic themes of movement and interaction of humans with the environment  prove that geography is destiny in western Africa and the US because if we didn't have these themes our world wouldn't be that world it is today. Geography is destiny because the themes of movement and place show that in Western Africa these two components are highly needed.

The movement theme of geography shows that they need to take risky chances like when they sent infected people to the US to help them get medicine to help cure this virus and stop it once and for all.Movement is when an idea, goods, or people are moved from one [place to another. According to the article, some of the infected patients were flown in to Atlanta and were given the best care possible at the Emory University Hospital.the article also states that by isolating the patients in this hospital helps it from spreading and risking more peoples lives. Therefore, this shows that by using one of the key components of geography will help get to the bottom of this virus.

The interactions of humans with the environment theme of geography shows that how a person changes their actions with the environment, for example someone get Ebola and they lock themselves in a room because they don't want to spread the disease is and interaction of humans with the environment. According to article,  interaction of humans with the environment takes a huge role in geography because how you act towards the environment can change everything. The article states that how you handle yourself with this Ebola disease can affect your surroundings. Therefore, this shows that interaction with the environment is a very important theme in geography and without having a smart way of handling your self with your surroundings could lead to us maybe all being dead from this virus.

Your Destiny Is Your Choice

The geographic themes of movement and interaction prove that geography is not destiny in Western Africa because of the fatal diseases that spread quickly in the area, specifically Ebola. Ebola is spread through contact with infected body fluids. Ebola has been spreading in the geographic region of Western Africa. The United States is looking to assist in medical help efforts.

Movement of Ebola
The movement theme of geography shows that ideas on useful and helpful medical treatments are being transferred between countries. Patients and people with Ebola have also been moved from Africa to the United States so that US hospitals and healthcare centers are able to get a closer look at the disease and understand how to treat it. Ideas about how to mobilize the “international community” and how the disease is being transmitted quickly are being moved back and forth, according to Obama Commits “Military Assets” for Ebola Health-Care Surge, published by Africa News Service. This movement of ideas, people, and medical goods demonstrates that geography is not destiny. Though one may live in Africa and be exposed to a disease, there are many resources for him/her to prevent diseases.

Interaction with Ebola
The interaction theme of geography shows that humans have been positively engaging with our environment with the common purpose of treating those with Ebola. Humans have been testing a new Ebola vaccine with monkeys that lasts from 5 weeks up to 10 months if used in conjunction with a booster shot. The monkeys in our environment have helped doctors grasp the concept and function of the Ebola vaccine, according to Obama- International Response Needed for Ebola Outbreak, published by Africa News Service. In the article “My survival was miraculous,” by Alloycious David, physicians help treat patients diagnosed with Ebola, which is being spread throughout the African environment. This interaction between people and their environment proves that geography is not destiny because people can take action based on how a problem or disease affects their area.

Africa's Worst Disease in Years: Ebola

The geographic themes of movement and interaction of humans in the environment prove that geography is destiny in the Western African society, because it shows how the Ebola disease is spreading and how aid is hard to access.

www.cnn.com
World volunteers help with the Ebola outbreak in Africa.

The movement  theme of geography shows how aid and supplies are difficulty transported, along with medical personnel.  According to “Africa News Service,” in the article, “Obama Commits ‘Military Assets’ for the Ebola Health-Care Surge,”  troops are being sent in to the region to help set up more advanced medical facilities, and isolation camps.  Troops are needed to build these structures along with private organizations.  And as the growing problem of Ebola, reaching the U.S. shores, has taken over the internet, President Obama says,”Americans shouldn't be concerned about the prospects of contagion here in the United States, short term. Because this is not an airborne disease.”  The president also spoke about how far the treatments have come.  Therefore, this shows how movement can effect on global projects, like the Ebola outbreak.

The interaction between humans and their environment, theme of geography shows how the Ebola outbreak has spread quickly and how people in the region are affected.  According to the "New York Times," in the article, “ New Thinking about Ebola Treatments,” the U.S. has to lead the fight against Ebola because it is one of the only capable countries, with medicine and supplies. “The new proposal would fill the gap by using drugs that have already been approved to treat other diseases and repurposing them to treat Ebola as well,” the article explains. In the Western african countries many people are incapable of getting helpful treatments, so using the alternative of using pre-made packaged medicine will get out to the masses quicker, rather than creating a new treatment, that would take months to years to make.

As people in the Western African region, create higher and higher risks of infection, geography does decide their destiny.  As the growing concerns about it hitting other places, and how to cure Ebola, pressure is building up to solve these problems.  Between the sanitation and lack of medicine, both movement and interaction create the Western African society’s destiny.

Is Geography Destiny?

Geography is destiny because of place and human interaction because if you live somewhere in the middle of Africa and you  have an illness like Ebola, you can only be cured by methods available to the area of Africa you’re in, which may not be the best treatment.
According to the CNN Wire, people are being transported out of West Africa to America for better treatment, however, only americans are being transported out. This is proof that geography decides destiny because the people who have the disease but aren't american are left in Africa to die from lack of treatment for the disease. People in Africa don't have access to the equipment needed to cure people with Ebola because the country that they live in may not be the wealthiest country and may not have access to the money necessary to get the equipment necessary to heal people with dangerous diseases such as Ebola.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the U.S. has given 100 million dollars to the countries in West Africa that are affected by this disease to help fight Ebola. The United States is transferring large amounts of money and resources to help fight the disease.

Overall I feel like geography does affect destiny because if they could, then the people in the small African villages would leave, but since a part of their lifestyle is to stay at the village and since nobody really leaves, then that is the destiny that their geography has made for them.

The Outcome for Ebola Victims

The geography themes of Movement and Interaction of Humans with the Environment prove that geography isn’t destiny because there are things the U.S and other countries to get rid of Ebola and make living in Africa a better place to be.

The Movement theme of geography shows that if the U.S went to help out Western Africa they could build hospitals and transport medicines and vaccines to the people of Western Africa. According to James Butty,"The good thing about democracy is that everybody has the right to see whatever they want to see and request whatever they want to request. We are focused on responding to the Ebola crisis; we are focused on ensuring that our health delivery system is improved; we are focused that our Liberian economy gets back on track; and, we are focused on ensuring that all of the international support and assistance that are coming to Liberia can be harnessed in dealing with this Ebola crisis," Samukai said.”Govt Welcomes U.S Military Role in Ebola Fight. Not only would people in Africa be taking medication to get rid of Ebola but the U.S is going to move troops, medication, and vaccines to West Africa.  Although the vaccines for preventing Ebola aren't very good yet, the U.S and West Africa researchers are coming together to try to make it happen.

The Interaction of Humans with the Environment  theme of geography shows that once the U.S gets to Africa they can start moving citizens infected with Ebola into isolation units. According to Africa News Service, Obama states,”Well, I'm going to get to that. It's not an airborne disease, like the flu. You can only catch it through the transmission of bodily fluids where you have a strong public health infrastructure. Now, typically, there's one person who's identified, or a couple of people who are identified as having the virus. Isolate them. Run through a real tight protocol. And it-- it gets contained-- pretty effectively. The problem that we've got is in, right now, a limited portion of western Africa”.Obama Commits 'Military Assets' for Ebola Health-Care Surge. With the right protocol and medication, isolation could help many patients get better quickly. Also West Africa wouldn't have to worry about many more people getting Ebola because these patients would be moved to a new environment and isolated, away from anyone others who don’t have the disease.

The geography themes of Movement and Interaction of Humans with the Environment prove that geography isn't destiny. Countries become powerful and prosperous all the time. One day Africa can be a country with barely any problems and diseases. The citizens of Africa determine their success not geography.
