Stores with nicer layouts get more profit. This seems simple enough, all a store owner needs to do is make everything look nice. Not that simple. The physical layout has much to do with whether or not you make a purchase. Location of merchandise, pathways and display all have much to do with a store's profit.
Location of merchandise is a key factor in customers buying things they don’t necessarily need. For example; if I wanted to sell you a stuffed animal in a clothing store, I would place it in the front of the store. The reason for this is because that is the point you pass twice. Once in, and once more out. I could also put the stuffed animals in the middle of aisles because you then must acknowledge them in order to get around them. Finally if I already know what the most popular product in the store, I could place the stuffed animal by that.

Pathways are an essential part of any if not all stores. When I say pathways what I am talking about are the aisles themselves. Notice whenever you walk into a store one of the first things you see are the tiled floors or some difference between where the cloths are and the walkway. Stores are like this because, according to The Science of Store Design, the more popular items are in the back of the store meaning you would have to pass by everything else in the store. The hope behind this concept is that something will catch your eye while walking there.
Display must be colorful and bright. Especially in windows, the more excitement in a store, the more likely it is to draw window shoppers in. Manikins are very essential for many different clothing stores. The message manikins send is, “you could look like this in these jeans!” or something of the sort. That is why you never see any overweight manikins. Inside the store it is absolutely necessary that everything has a place regardless of what it is, according to The Science of Store Design.
As you may be able to tell there are many different ways to make a store presentable both physically and graphically.

Who buys what and how do companies target certain people?
