Do you have social anxiety?

This information is from NIH (National Institude of Mental Health). This information is reliable because it is apart of the National Insitutes of Health, which is a component of the U.S. Department and Human Services.

1) What is the cause of anxiety?
One way they can develop anxiety is from stress. A phobia like this sometimes runs in families or the person just develops it. Also researchers think stress and environmental factors can play a role in causing anxiety.

2) What are the main signs and symptoms?
The biggest sign is being anxious and scared to be around other people and to talk to them. Another symptom is being very self conscious/embarrassed when in front of others. Most of the times these people are scared to be around others and talk to others because they are worried that people will judge them. NIH says that people that suffer from anxiety may also worry many days before and event. At Hinsdale Central I know that when it becomes the week before finals everyone starts freaking out about studying and their moods all change. Lasty another symptom is sweating, trembling, feeling nauseous or sick, around others. All of these symptoms show how serious anxiety and how if it is not solved how it can completely change your life.

What are some possible treatments?
Social phobia/anxiety can be treated with psychotherapy, medication, or both. Psychotherapy deals with helping people by teaching them ways to not get scared in a situation. “It teaches a person different ways of thinking, behaving, and reacting to situations.”  This is an important way of handing anxiety because when they then start to feel anxiety over something, they know how to overcome it. Another treatment by medication. “Doctors can prescribe medication to help treat social phobia.”Most of the times these doctors will prescribe anti-anxiety medications and antidepressants. Both of these treatments work but it depends on which one will work for you.
Future research question- 1) When you are being treated for anxiety how does your life change? 2) How are your friendships affected when suffering anxiety?
